    Ventile in North America

Thanks for the feedback, guys. The Ventile field coat on the empirecanvasworks site looks promising and I think I'll have to look at it in more detail. No luck with the wintergreen site, all I've seen so far are nylon anoraks. Thanks again and if anyone else has anything to add, let me know...

    Ventile in North America

Hi all, I doubt I'll be remembered but several years ago I was a regular and enthusiastic poster on these forums. I have a small query: Does anyone know of a North American Ventile distributor? My parka, a hand-me-down from an elderly family member has given up the proverbial ghost and I'm...

    Mora, who's is the best

Old Jimbo, (I don't know if he posts here anymore) I think did a really great review of the Frosts and Eriksson knives on his webpage which at the moment I can't remember the URL for. (But it's probab,g out there somewhere). If I remember correctly, he found the Frosts model to be superior to...

    Smock Smock Smock

Sorry for being so late in replying to this thread guys, first week back at university and all that. I had a lot of parties to go to and a fair amount of school work to take care of as well. *cough cough* Fast But Dim, I'm surprised that you don't find G-1000 showerproof. I was very careful...

    Smock Smock Smock

Ehhhh....the Endicott smock looks alright, but I'd recommend a Fjallraven Nordli anorak in G1000. It has four large pockets, is tough as nails, nylon mesh lined and in my opinion, is very nearly equal to Ventile. And it's half the price. Oh, and it dries fast to boot. Cheers, Adam

    Cheap Smock from Endicotts

I just thought of something: The Endicotts smock could easily be proofed with Fjallraven's G1000 wax. I'm not a fan of Nixwax as I don't particularly like their formula. Stormproofing works better I think, and the G1000 wax is even better. Adam

    Ventile as Sole Waterproof?

This is comforting, I take a year long break from the forums and the endless Ventilie questions still haven't been settled! :) But in all seriousness, yes, I probably would supplement Ventile with something else. Mind you, I've officially retired my double layer anorak and replaced it with...

Wanted: Crusader-style lid to fit US and Canadian army canteen cups

Hey guys, It's been quite a while since I've posted, but I'm sure that at least some of you will remember me. Anyway, I've been looking to find a metal lid that will fit my Canadian army canteen cup. Making brews on a beach in late February and early March without a lid for my brew kit uses...

    Tom Brown Tracker (1st version)

Oh I don't know if the Tracker is such a bad knife, I think that it has its purpose in certain situations. I mean, yes, its heavy as all hell, looks like a monstrosity, but I'm sure that there are people out there who swear by them. And quite frankly, I think that many of the posters on this...

    Mora 2000 in the Jungle

Bod, I think that that's a decent review; very well thought out and photographed. My only criticism is that some of the activities you put the Mora 2000 are not exactly what I would consider "optimal" for a knife of that size. I'm glad that the blade stood up so well to such heavy use, but...

Mountain Equipment Co-op pulls polycarbonate water bottles from shelves.

Apparently the aluminum/alzheimers/breast cancer scam originated with anti-perspirant because it contains aluminum chloride. So, apparently deodorant is (supposedly) safer. But as for the Nalgene thing, well...*takes a drag from a cigarette* I'm really not too concerned about the whole health...

    Yes, thanks for that. :)

Adam's excellent proofing adventure. (aka: I treated the Ventile)

....that would present a problem then!

    Trangia Mini Stove

Yes, the winter attachment is used to pre-heat the meths burner so that its easier to light. But it won't fit the '28' model which makes the Mini next to useless in the winter, regardless of whether or not you have a proper windscreen and a good insulator between the small pot stand and the...

    Trangia Mini Stove

It's a great little stove when used in moderate weather conditions and with a better windscreen. It doesn't do much in winter or for melting snow but for a one or two nighter the 28 'Mini' does quite well. Adam

Adam's excellent proofing adventure. (aka: I treated the Ventile)

Wow, this is an O-L-D thread and its nice to see it still getting page hits! I wouldn't worry about the white crease lines Spacemonkey, no one's going to poke fun at the appearance of your clothes in the bush. (At least I hope not) Cheers, Adam

    Ventile - is it warm?

I've got a Fjallraven G-1000 anorak. The Nordli model, if I remember correctly. I'd rate it as being roughly as good in the rain as Ventile. The only thing I miss about my retired Ventile parka is that when it got wet, it stiffened up and to me at least, felt like I was wearing a suit of armour...

    Goretex re-proofer - Nikwax?

Sickboy is right on the money, without a DWR gore-tex, entrant, and any and all WPB garments would not be breathable. Period. As wonderful as gore-tex is, the sad fact of the matter is that without a good DWR, the garment is next to useless. You might as well be wrapping your torso in saran wrap...
