    A hike around East Falkland

In case anyone has any updated information that might be useful since last October, I have booked my flights. The only thing that will stop me now is cowardice! As I am going to be following the roads, can anyone provide information about the frequency of rivers, streams, creeks etc. I will...

    Winter 'crafting

I am going to hike from my place in Kenley, Surrey to Hastings on the coast over 5 days at Christmas- New year, using a 58 pattern poncho for shelter. I won't be able to build fires and will be using a trangia for cooking. I can also attest to the benefits of wind breaks and insulation...

    One man tents

Dear All, I am currently aquiring information and kit for a proposed trip to the Falklands in early 2012. By all accounts, it is likely to be constantly windy with the possibility of rain and even snow. Whilst I would normally use a 58 pattern poncho to sleep under, my instincts are telling...

Does anyone go camping on their own?

I hiked the South West Coast Path solo over 4 stages from Minehead in Somerset to Clovelly in Devon on my own. While hiking, solitude isn't so bad. However, if the weather turns sour (and at one stage, it was about 5C with horizontal rain, hail and a gale whipping off the sea), it is a little...

How much water do you carry?

I agree with NigelTM that 2 litres is the very least. I am always amazed at just how much water I get through when in camp. As I am hiking for most of the day, I tend not to carry too much until I know when I am camping, then resupply at the last available town or village.

Army Surplus Kit? (Info NOT Suppliers!)

I agree with Phaserrifle- I think you have pattern 58 webbing, but seem to be missing the waterbotle pouch. Do any of the 'kit pockets have buckles or do they all have tab fasteners (where the canvas tab goes through the square metal loop)? This guy has taken the time to run through assembly...

    A hike around East Falkland

Dear All, Once again, thanks for all the offerings- I am slowly compiling this information and making notes. So far, the thrust of the informations seems to be that as a hiking experience, it will be barren, boring, continually windy (with the threat of sunburn) and generally harsh, with...

    trangia argument

Can anyone tell me whether the Swedish Army trangia set up can accommodate a British Army issue cup? I have been a hexi user for twenty years but am looking at a Trangia alternative, though I usually hike for 4-5 days using PLCE webbing, so the adaptability is important.

Question for all the military webbing experts out there!

I believe the Australian webbing is loosely called M-56 and is patterned on the US stuff of the era. The pouches are certainly L1A1 SLR pouches and the pack is what they called a 'Nam Pack'- sleeping bag compartment at the bottom and approximately enough space at the top to fit a ration pack...

Wifeys trip to the Falkland islands

Thanks for everyones' suggestions (and Southey, I am sorry to have hijacked your thread!). I shall be contacting the police upon arrival and giving them an expected itinerary. I am advised that I can pick up a map that has landowner details on it and so will also be making contact with...

    A hike around East Falkland

Thanks to all who have replied with answers and suggestions thus far. My plan is simply to hike on the major roads out of and back into Stanley, and along a single secondary road between Darwin and San Carlos. I appreciate the 'boredom' aspect, but it is the challenge of doing the miles that...

    A hike around East Falkland

Thanks for your posts, gents. I am going to be using established roads over the route- there appear to be two main roads heading out from Stanley- Darwin Road to Goose Green and Darwin and North Camp Road between Stanley and San Carlos. Judging from Google maps and other sources, there...

Wifeys trip to the Falkland islands

Did wifey go to any of the settlements outside Stanley and if so, how are they fixed for shops? I am worried that if I can't resupply anywhere, then I will have to lug 12 days of food from Stanley. Did she say anything about the wind? What time of year was her trip and what was the weather...

    A hike around East Falkland

Dear All, In early 2012, I am planning a hike around East Falkland- a clockwise, circular trek from Stanley, stopping in at Fitzroy and Bluff Cove, across to Goose Green, up to San Carlos then across the top, back to Stanley via Teal Inlet and Estancia. The route is approximately 170...

Wifeys trip to the Falkland islands

Southey, I am planning a hike around East Falkland in early 2012 and I wondered whether it would be alright if I could post some questions that wifey might be able to provide some answers for? Cheers.

Pierr! You did it! Nice one. So I just use the url address as normal?- it seems like you just removed the [IMG] parts.

    Poncho shelters

Right, here are a couple of photos of my poncho set- ups. The first two are my standard 'triangular tube'. The second two are the result of the end- of- day desperation of having no suitable place to pitch up while passing through Croyde in North Devon. I just decided to use the rock formation...

    Poncho shelters

When I first stared hiking, it was probably a weight- and- space thing to use a hootchie. Nowadays, I guess that tents are certainly much more compact and lightweight and the bloke I hike with certainly doesn't have a problem with either factor. I find the biggest climactic issue is the rain-...
