    Horse Hoof Fungus

I used a firesteel and a carbon steel knife, as usual. The fungus caught immediately, without the need for blowing. One of these days I'll try a real flint and steel (when I can find a steel). I have the feeling that it would be pretty easy to light the fungus with that.... even with a single...

    Horse Hoof Fungus

Reading up about the horse hoof fungus, I found that it lives mostly in the North of England and Scotland, and mainly on dead birch and beech trees. So whilst partaking in my walk the other day here in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire I passed the landmark of a huge dead old beech stump...

    Gloucestershire thread follow up

I am within line of sight.... but the other side of the river up in the Forest of Dean. It wouldn't take too much for me to make the trip over.... well, around via Gloucester. Rod

    Recommend me an alarm clock

If I try that, then I wake up too early or in the middle of the night! Sensible no cost solution: You find the person in the group who is going to wake up early, and then simply tell them to wake you up at a particular time. Simples. Rod

    Snugpak antarctica sleeping bag

Thanks. I just managed to get it fitted. I managed to get both zippers onto one zip, but only one of them onto the other. That's no big deal as I have one which opens from either end, and its going to be rare for me to have to open it from the bottom anyway. I must say.... the bag is now...

    Snugpak antarctica sleeping bag

OK.... and thanks. Yes, there is a special expanda panel for the Antarctic only. I had one delivered today from Polmil. Now to the problem: How the heck do I get it fitted! I can't get the existing zipper toggles off the bottom end of the existing zip. I think that I could by...

    Fleece, or not to fleece...

Perfect. And for an extra (windproof) layer in the evening if you need it, one of those lightweight Swedish snow smocks. Rod

    Brew kits.

The Kelly Kettle every time. I have the smallest one. I carry some kindling and 6 to 10 pencil sized sticks from home in the chimney if the weather is damp (or some pine cones that I collected on my last walk, dried at home). It boils in a couple of minutes. Brillant, easy and fast. Rod

    Frontline or Camping DD Hammock??

It is obviously different for different people. However what I can't really understand is how sleeping in a bivvi bag in the hammock will make a difference. Follow my logic.... The bottom of the Travel hammock is of waterproof material..... 1. The bottom of a bivvi bag is waterproof...

    I won a DD hammock!

DD Hammocks have a regular draw on their Facebook page.... http://www.facebook.com/pages/D-D-Hammocks/223450745029?v=wall I just won a hammock! That's the first time I have won anything in the last 15 years or so.... a bottle of plonk in a pub raffle. Now, a DD hammock is much more useful...

Wild Boar cull in the FoD

In the local newspapers, which are not circulated in Dudley, half the country away. I give up. You obviously have a different point of view because you don't live with them on your doorstep. Fair enough. You are entitled to your point of view, and I am entitled to mine, which will remain...

    Arctic birch burr wanted

Plain birch is basically the same as we get here, but the good stuff, Masur Birch is very, very expensive! Obscenely expensive for a log large enough to make two kuskas. Also, the problem with buying here, is that it will be seasoned and dried out timber which is much harder to work with. Do...

Wild Boar cull in the FoD

Yes.... whilst you are safely tucked away up in Dudley, these are the very ones where I live. They are just a few hundred yards away from my house. The ones that have put several humans in hospital last year with gored legs and thighs. The ones that have killed several dogs during the last year...
