More Fungus- This may be unusual.

My partner has sent me some shots of some fugus. They are growing on the side of tamarisk trees on the island of Lesvos, Greece. The trees are growing on a sea front in quite a saline envronment. I think the two specimens may be the same species at differing parts of thier development cycle...

    Valentines Day

In Medaeval times Valantines day was believed to be the day birds chose their mates for the coming year. Of course we know better now, but...... As I was walking my dog today I was struck by the number of pairs of birds I saw. Also, the amount of birdsong, and the species involved was much...

Nearly midnight and there are geese flying overhead

Navigation and migration in the animal kingdom is an incredible thing isn't it. The salmon that sits on my right shoulder is a reminder of that.

Nearly midnight and there are geese flying overhead

An awful lot of migration occurs at night Toddy. It may be a defense against predators or the cooler temps prevent small bodies from overheating, or it may be that the earths magnetic field is less "cluttered" at night. Or it may be something else entirely.

    Lure Fishing

Do not forget surface poppers like Storm Chug Bugs or Rapala Skitter Pops. Nothing in lure fishing beats the sight of a predatory fish nailing one of these off the top. On the right day they are unbeatable. They can also be cast into areas where a subsurface lure cannot be worked because you...

What's the point in SAK saws?

I suppose you could use it like a T-Bar. They rely on the wieght of the fish pulling the barb out. They work like this. Hold the line not the fish. Hook the line below your hand into the hook. Pull the SAK sidewards untill the fishook locates into the SAK hook You can now invert the fish hook...

Doing our bit for the birds

Some of us do hertsboy. Toddy Outside the breeding season robins are very agressive little blighters. There is no reason why your two are the same sex. They are quite capable of fighting in the winter and breeding in the spring. That is what the singing is all about.

    Red Salmon

I have just had the tattoo shown in my avatar done. As you can see it is in an american native people's style. In the middle of the fish is a kneeling figure. I assume that this represents a scene from a traditional story. Is there anyone out there who recognises this tale, or who could give me...

    foraging on the sea shore

Razorfish are only really available at low water on spring tides. They are not keen on being exposed to the air. Yes, you do use salt to catch them. The method is to walk backwards scuffing your feet. this will collapse the razorfish burrow. The animal attempts to blow water up to clean out the...
