Stainless Steel Lunchbox - Elephant Box

I'll have to confess to not having looked for anything elsewhere, as I mentioned, it's a friend of mine starting the venture and I thought it was a great product and wanted to help get the word out for her crowdfunder. A key feature of the Elephant box I believe is that it is taller and will...

Stainless Steel Lunchbox - Elephant Box

Fancy an ethically sourced stainless steel lunchbox? A friend of mine (my only connection) is running a crowdfunder to start a business selling them, which also means getting one at a great discount. Ideal for the rough and tumble of the outdoors and no nasty plastic :)...

crossing the alps, are there any trails?

Try googling GR routes. Especially the GR 5 which might be of interest. There are a lot of amazing long distance routes in the mountains of Europe. http://www.grfive.com Scoops

What to get to flatten waterstones with?

I flatten my oil stones with a granite surface plate and wet and dry paper. If you don't have access to a surface plate, you could use a thick sheet of glass. Scoops

    Ash keys as food

I had some ash key pickle at the weekend, it was delicious. In a proper i'd eat this every day sort of way. I think it was made from a recipe in Richard Mabey's Food for free, but there are a lot of editions of that book and I don't know which it was.As I understand it, it was basically ash...

    Legal advice needed, regarding cats!

I bought one of these, connects to hose pipe, squirts water when some passes. It worked brilliantly protecting my raised beds. Once the cats were 'educated' I didn't even have to connect it up!! Scoops

Crack in Canoe - Fibreglass Repair Kit??

I would do this as a 'wet on wet' repair.... Roughen the repair area and wipe clean with some acetone. Mix some epoxy thickened with colloidal silica (mix a small batch of epoxy as directed say 50ml, easy maths with the 5:1 ratio for West Epoxy) then add approx the same volume again of silica...

    Repairing a Wooden Canoe Paddle

Here's a vacuum infusion job I was involved in on a canoe yawl, was interesting to set up although getting it airtight so the vacuum would hold took a bit of patience! Scoops

    Repairing a Wooden Canoe Paddle

The strip plank boats I've been involved in making, open canoes, sailing canoes and small (<16ft) open boats have typically used the best part of a 30kg drum during the build which comes in at around £300. Using vacuum infusion get's the amount needed and the weight down a bit but you're right...

    Repairing a Wooden Canoe Paddle

Did you use the "Fastglas" resin pictured? If you did that's a polyester resin rather than an epoxy resin. I mention this only because you also refer to a 'high hardener to resin mix'. Changing the quantity a little is OK with polyester resins but will result in a weaker cure if done with epoxy...

Crack in Canoe - Fibreglass Repair Kit??

If they recommend the poly drip try that. The first time you try it doesn't have to be on the boat, have a play. :) "Fibreglass" by which I assume they mean a polyester resin based system, has poor adhesive qualities which will be why it is advised against. The "Mad River" repair kit looks...

Crack in Canoe - Fibreglass Repair Kit??

Sorry, I clearly said "some" chopped strand matting not "all". I'm simply trying to guide the OP into choosing compatible components for his repair based on what is readily available on the UK market not add to any confusion.

Crack in Canoe - Fibreglass Repair Kit??

Don't want to get too complicated. Obvious example, some chopped strand matting is held together with a binder that is dissolved by the styrene in a polyester resin to allow consolidation of the layup. If you used an epoxy resin, which contains no styrene, you wouldn't get the binder dissolving...

Crack in Canoe - Fibreglass Repair Kit??

You're quite correct, although I never actually said they were. From the perspective of a layperson, fiberglass is widely understood as the combination of glass reinforcement in a polyester resin, hence my adding the term in brackets. It's worth adding that if a re-inforcement cloth is used...
