Bushcraft Bunny Helps with Tinder :-)

Just a quick tip, that you may have thought of already, but just in case :) I was practising my bow drill last weekend and needed some good tinder to put the ember into. The pet rabbit has eaten most of my long grass that I had used in the past, so I had none handy, except for the straw in...

    Directory of Knots- John Shaw

I found the above book, ring bound hard back, at a Garden centre on one of those Cheap Books displays that they often have at these places. It was £4.99, and its quite a nice reference for different types of knots ranging from the most commonly used and most useful, to some fancy decorative...

    Woodlander Arrives- Ben Orford Knife

My Woodlander has arrived. Hurrah. I found Ben via the Woodsmoke site and liked the look of his work, and after speaking to him was convinced this was the knife for me. He was very helpful and friendly and discussed what I wanted and offered advice. Same after it arrived. He called to check I...

    Swanni Sizing- Does this help

Just recieved a lovely new Olive Swanni Ranger shirt from Andrew at Outdoorcode (Thanks Andrew....great service) I had read about the sizing, and how the quoted sizes are actual chest size of the garment, so I ordered a Large. When it came it drowned me. Sleeves too long, shoulders too...

    Arrow Shafts-Tinder.

Hello All, not been here for a while....been busy doing outdoors stuff. :-) And it was while out shooting my bow that I came across an excellent tinder. Cedar. Nothing new there I hear you say, as many of the books show how you can scrape cedar bark to make a good tinder for lighting by...

    WS-Woodlore-Micarta Long Term

I've got a micarta handled version of the WS/Woodlore knife. Had it since about November last year. After getting the edge sorted the knife has been a joy to use, just recently though I've noticed that the handle material is staring to show signs of wear, scratches and scrapes etc from the...

    Firelighting & Sparks

This may sound a bit basic, but I only got the hang of it a couple of weeks ago. I've been using my knife and steel to produce lovely showers of sparks, but it was taking me lots of attempts to actually get anything to land where I wanted it to, and for the spark to then ignite the tinder...

    Ren Wax at Lakeland Plastics

I know that many of you have recommended Ren Wax for protecting sheaths and blades, but that it was not all that easy to find. Well, I found it at Lakeland Plastics over the weekend. In the cleaning section with the metals polishes etc. Bit more expensive than on the web, but without the...

    Curious About Coppicing

I'm curious as to how you manage the resource for coppicing. I read in the forums that you need about 35 acres, and use about 5 acres a year, and that by rotating where you work the first lot is ready again just as you finish with your last 5 acres. I'm interested in knowing and had some...

    Sharpening My Dartmoor.......

I saw Uncle Ray, putting an edge on his golok using a waterstone in a way unlike the way described in his book. He got it and rubbed the whole stone in a circular motion on the blade, rather than move the blade along the stone. Thought I'd give it a try on my Dartmoor, which has proved to...

    Bushcraft Accreditation & FC Woodland?

I was thinking......... :-? The Forestry Com have loads of woodland all over the country, and I understand that they want to focus more on people using it for recreation. Walking and cycling is allowed and on some woodland you can camp on designated areas. Wouldn't it be good though if...

    New Shirt/Blouse Clips

I took those little plastic clips that are used for packing new shirts and blouses etc. They make really good pegs for holding your birch bark in place when making boxes and cups etc. Use them to hold the flaps and edges in place while you wait for your glue to dry or while you do your stitching.

How do you know when it's sharp enough?

It might sound like a daft question, but how can you tell when your knife is at the right level of "sharp". I've always rubbed my thumb across the edge, but as I get older, the skins getting tougher and it's harder to tell. I've seen people test by cutting paper, then oters have told me...

    Sharpening Advice & Tips.

Hi All, It was suggested that it would be a good idea to start a thread here about sharpening. There has been some discussion on the Wilkinson Sword/Allan Wood Woodlore Knives thread, but having it's own thread may make it easier for people to find when they need to. So, for starters...

Spoon Gouge / Crooked Knife-Where are they available?

Hello All, Its that time of year again, where Xmas lists are being requested by my nearest and dearest. One of the things I would like is a spoon gouge. I saw one on RM's site, but at £40 quid, it's a bit expensive. I did however, see one for £20 on another bushcraft/outdoors site, but...

Birch Bark & Tissue With Sparks

I was practising with my new fire stick in the garden yesterday, and was trying to ignite finely chopped birch bark. I couldn't get it to take the spark so I got a bit of tissue out of my pocket and buffed it up and laid it under the bark peelings. Got another shower of sparks going, and the...
