Rucksack lowe alpine sting ,any reviews ?

I don't have the Sting - but I do have a couple of other Lowe Alpine bags, which I rag during climbing (winter, summer and alpine) and they're pretty damn bomb proof! Thoroughly recommended brand.

    Chainsaw advice

Sorry for the late reply guys, been pretty busy! Thanks for all the info (and yes, I'll keep the kickguard on), and I'm still just waiting for that ebay bargain on some PPE. I think possibly some sort of cast iron forehead protection may be in order too, I'm not in the market for a lobotomy...

    I've been naughty!

I enjoyed the description of the item too. Far more interesting to read than the usual, boring info.

    Chainsaw advice

Ah cheers Red, are there are any slightly cheaper options? As 50 quid seems quite a fair amount for it. I am going to get a certificated, but more for peace of mind. As I'm not totally inexperienced handling them (thank god), as used them a few times with the Forestry Commission in Malaysia. I...

    Chainsaw advice

I've found a Sanli cs45 45 in good nick (and from a little research on a few arb' websites, they seem pretty well reviewed). It however comes without a bar and chain. I gather an Oregon bar is the way to go, but there is an absolutely bewildering amount of bars and chains to choose from! Any...

    Chainsaw advice

A question to all the foresters and arb's out there. I need to get a small chainsaw for limbing and cutting down small trees - and in which I can ideally use for trail building. Would the husqy 236 or Stihl 171 be reasonable for that? If not, what would you advise? I apologise if this is in...

Article: Zemgear - Ninja Split Toe

These look pretty good! I'm currently trying out huaraches (the tamahumara design) for both running and just strolling around. Definitely worth checking out too - and can be cheaply made...

    ellusive parang

I'll be heading back to Sarawak once I finish university (this summer), to visit family and work for a while - so I'll take orders for parangs! It's generally easier to go to a cutlers/random-crap-shop and buy the cheap ones their - then rehandle it, as they're generally plastic. On another...

Fire at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall River Cottage kitchens

Hugh is definitely one of the key figures in bringing foraging and 'wild food' to the masses Felix, rather than limiting it to the few (for example, us on this forum), who enjoy watching it with survival aspects, ie Ray. His original series were pretty good for wild eating and what not, and he...

    HomeMade Tarp

Check out extremtextil and Shelby too for fabrics and patterns (if you decide you want to make other things too...), and the MYOG section of BackpackingLight is worth a peek. Be careful, it gets addictive.

Jobs involving the outdoors - Suggestions?

I'm taking a slightly different approach to working in the outdoors - once I finish university this year, I'm going to start working properly towards becoming a British Mountain Guide (rather than climbing and skiing trips done in the lazy, student fashion...). The pay in the Alps is ok and you...

    GoPro Hero HD2

I've had the original HD and just upgraded to the HD2, and they are absolutely brilliant bits of kit! Mine is used for climbing, skiing and skydiving (and the odd night out I dare take it on at university...). The quality of the video is absolutely brilliant and the stills from the HD2 in...

    How waterproof is tweed?

I have a tweed riding jacket which is brilliant throughout the winter due to the fact that it's warm and waterproof, I've got the feeling it's been treated though?

    Just interested, any climbers here?

My partner was in the British Sport climbing team, and she was shorter than me (impressive as that is), and I can vouch that skill/good power to weight ratio really does get you places. I've just got back into climbing the last couple of years after a couple of years out due to a recurrent...

Also the other question is, is what does he want to use it for?

    Down Or Synthetic Insulation

This is a never ending debate on UKC and some expedition and skiing forums! It all boils down to where you want to use it. In Scotland, for example, I prefer synthetic for both jacket and 'bag. But if I'm somewhere drier I'll choose a down jacket (never camped in that type of environment).

    Non-bushcraft / hi-tech waterproof shell jacket?

I quite like the funny facething - at the beginning I found it got in the way, but it actually folds to the side quite nicely! I use it for skiing and climbing, and the fit is absolutely brilliant. It is an 'athletic cut' though, so quite slim. Patagonia, afaik are phasing out their own brand...

    Non-bushcraft / hi-tech waterproof shell jacket?

The berghaus asgard smock is being released. Built for mountaineering and big-wall climbing it is incredibly light weight! I actually regret buying my attrition jacket, finding out a week later about the smock.
