what is your oldest piece of kit that you still use today?

My mom gave me a box of stuff from her attic. I opened it and found the boy scout canteen that I got 24 years ago. Cleaned it out, cleaned it up, no leaks, and it a good size. I loved that canteen. Holds about two quarts and has a belt clip on the side so I can attach it to my pack. So...

What is the best bushcrafting dog?

I'm a proud purebred mutt owner. I'll never own another purebreed again. Ruby is a collie, chihuahua, sharpei, beagle mix. She never gets out of sight of me when we hike. One time the kids even got lost without their whistles. It took the wife and I almost an hour to find them. When we...

You could cut out the good sections of the tent and use the material for patches on future tents.

American and British knife size difference

When I was younger I always wanted the biggest baddest knife I could find when I went into the woods. Now with more knowledge and experience I've moved down to a knife no bigger than 4''-5''. That being said if I could only carry one knife as my only tool in an extreme situation, I would want...

    Show us your spydercos

I'm a big Spyderco fan. I wandered into good deals on the Bushcraft knife and an Endura. Other than those I generally can't afford a true Spyderco, but do also have a Byrd Cara Cara which is the poor man's Endura.

    Show your Kuksas!

A kuksa is going to be my next bushcrafty "first". I just haven't gone out recently and found a good hunk of wood. I'm hoping I can get something at least partially as good as the ones I've seen on here.

    Gerber Suspension Review (pic heavy)

I bought one a couple years ago because of the price. I liked it well enough but like 1972 said, it didn't seem geared for outdoor use. It gets most of its use from me at work now (I'm a mechanic).

    Svord Drop Point Knife

I know alot of folks have and love the Svord Peasant Knife. I started looking around at the Svord website and really like the look of the Economy Drop Point knife. Does anyone own one or had the chance to play with one? If so, what is your opinion?

US canteen cup vs Crusader Cup

I have a NATO bottle but no cup to go with it. I end up using the US canteen and cup because I've been able to get my hands on so many free ones over the years. I've also noticed that Bear Grylls has recently started to use the US version, so you know they're good!

Which kit item pushes your buttons ?

Knives, rucksacks, knives, shoulder bags, knives, military surplus, and knives. On a slow day though I can be found looking at knives.

    where did your username comefrom

I've loved pirates ever since I was a kid and listened to Treasure Island on tape. Since then I joined the Air Force and became a crew chief. I then found out that crew chiefs, and most maintainers in general, are seen as kind of rogues and scoundrels. Then I started flying missions as a...

What is the best bushcrafting dog?

This is the best dog I've ever had, Ruby the Wonder Mutt. We just sent in a DNA home test on her to see what all breeds she's got in her.

The Next Schrade Extreme Survival Knife

I would be proud of that blade as well. Since you are "in" with the company, can you get us a discount? ::wink wink:: Let them know my first "real" (non SAK) outdoor knife was a Shrade Cliphanger.

    Magentus, RME are my initials.

    Your most heroic failure (s)

I have a heroic failure every time my wife asks me to light a fire for somebody else. The words "Hey Honey, show them how you can start a fire with your firesteel!" instantly produces an anti-fire force field around me which even lighter fluid and lifeboat matches can not penetrate.
