    Trip Report Part 4: Classic Backpacking 2/13/16 - 2/14/16

I think you are correct on all the points you made. From what I've managed to find, this time period, between 1880 and 1930, what I am calling the Classic Backpacking period, we get the first attempts at doing any type of year round camping out of a backpack. Prior to that, if a person was...

    Trip Report Part 4: Classic Backpacking 2/13/16 - 2/14/16

I'm sure I could have started it eventually. I might have had to do some running around until my body stopped overreacting to being chilled, and the shivering subsided, but I would have probably been fine. It would have been an unpleasant night, but I've been through worse. As long as the mind...

I tried. It had hardened so much that I couldn't properly wrap it and the wind just pushed it off. It was like trying to work with a big piece of cardboard. I didn't expect that the cold would effect it to such a degree.

    Trip Report Part 4: Classic Backpacking 2/13/16 - 2/14/16

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. @Joonsy-I think you are exactly right. I think the expectation that you will be warm and comfortable while out in the woods, or even at home is fairly modern. AN old house or cabin with a wood burning stove is a cold place, especially in the mornings. I...

    Trip Report Part 4: Classic Backpacking 2/13/16 - 2/14/16

Last weeks outing was uneventful, so I decided to skip the trip report, but this past weekend we lucked out with some actual winter weather, so I figured the trip would be worth shearing. I also wanted to test the limits of my current Classic Backpacking sleep system, and I figured this would do...

    Feedback required on product idea

I've used bivies before, but I prefer a tent because it gives significantly more room for very little extra weight. If I was to use a bivi I would need it to be significantly lighter than an ultralight tent.

    Water

Dehydration is a serious problem if you want to continue functioning in the woods. For short periods of time the human body can endure a lot, but that's neither sustainable, nor is it a great way to go camping. At least that's not how I read the op. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

    Winter camping with young family?

A three year old kit in a confined space with a wood burning stove will be tricky. Otherwise the stove will keep the space warm as long as you keep feeding it.

    Water

It depends on how much activity I plan on doing and how hot the weather is. On an average trip (up to ten miles of hiking in moderate weather) I plan on about 2.5L per day. This includes water for rehydrating food. I carry one Nalgene bottle (1L) and a 1.5L collapsible bottles. I add more...

    Natural-fibre sleep mat?

My statement had two separate parts. The first was that if you are going to put that much work in and use that much resources, you can get better insulation from the exact same materials with the same work by cutting them up and placing them on the ground instead of making a raised bed. The...

    Trip Report Part 3: Classic Backpacking 1/30/16 - 1/31/16

I like using a hot water bottle when I'm sleeping in my sleeping bag. When I'm using a fire however, I try not to use hot rocks or a hot water bottle because I like to stay connected to the fire for warmth. That way I can better sense when it is getting low or about to go out. With the hot rocks...

    Natural-fibre sleep mat?

I wouldn't use a raised bed in cold weather. It provides no insulation. The air may very well be colder than the ground depending on the temperature. A much better use of all that wood and rope would be to cut it up into small chips and pieces and pile it up on the ground. It will give much...

    Natural-fibre sleep mat?

In the American Civil War soldiers generally carried very little, usually just a blanket and a shelter half. If there was any more elaborate sleep system, it was transported by wagon or pack train. If you read How to Camp Out by John M. Gould, 1877 you can get a good feel for the type of gear...

    Trip Report Part 3: Classic Backpacking 1/30/16 - 1/31/16

Thanks Rustee. You can always find wood to burn. It just requires more care in a hardwood forest. I had a small amount ready in case I needed it for any reason. If I have to get up in the middle of the night to look for firewood, I've got serious problems. :) As far as the quilt, the one I...

    Trip Report Part 3: Classic Backpacking 1/30/16 - 1/31/16

Thank you for providing the link. The Woods Arctic Sleeping Robe is a good example of down technology that was available at the time. Not backpack portable at 16lb, but much better than the equivalent number of blankets. Sleep systems progressed very quickly during this period. The Woods...

    Trip Report Part 3: Classic Backpacking 1/30/16 - 1/31/16

Thanks Toddy. You are right about the clothing issue. My grandfather used to wear a wool vest when working out in the middle of the summer...so he "wouldn't catch a cold".

    Trip Report Part 3: Classic Backpacking 1/30/16 - 1/31/16

The down comforter is much warmer than a second blanket. This will allow me to go to much lower temperatures. I find that a second blanket will keep me comfortable to just below freezing. Much lower than that and I either need a fire going all nigh, or I'm going to be miserable. Sent from my...

Rubberized cotton is definitely heavy. That's why haven't bothered with one. I also don't have much space left in my pack. I thought of bringing an oil cloth ground sheet, but oil cloth does allow water through if you are in direct contact with it. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
