    Brownies Badge Book Omissions!

What a fascinating idea. Does anyone else think this? It just seems kind of odd to me. In my family, outdoorsy-stuff comes very obviously thorugh the maternal line - my dad, his parents, and my mum's dad were all city people. My mum, her mum and her mum were all outdoors types. By the looks of...

Pattern to make a rucksack cover

Thanks for all the ideas guys, sorry I should have explained a bit. I already have the material I want to make the cover from, and it isn't and doesn't need to be waterproof - it's a one-off special for someone. (I'm not saying any more than that because I know they read the forums!) It's a 10l...

Pattern to make a rucksack cover

Hi all, I've been trying to find a pattern to use to make a rucksack cover - I'm sure it's straightforward so I'll make it up as I go along if I can't find one, but I'd prefer a tried-and-tested pattern if possible. Does anyone happen to have a pattern, or know where I could find a pattern?

like a ... duck to water?

Ducklings and mess cannot be separated, ever. The amount of poo that comes out of one duckling is one of nature's mysteries, as is the sheer height to which they can splash it given a few hours and a half-full water pot (shortly becoming an empty water pot of course...). Let them splash around...

    How safe are women alone?

I've never worried about being out and about in the countryside by myself, and I've never had cause to worry. I don't carry anything with the idea that I might use it as a weapon if provoked. However, I live in a city, and I've felt genuinely scared alone in the dark in town because I know...

    timepiece

I have an old basic Casio watch I got second-hand and ready-battered from eBay several years ago for about £4. It's definitely water resistant, boot resistant and scratches don't make themselves obvious. Hasn't broken down yet, though has gone a bit wobbly once or twice. Hasn't needed a battery...

    Yes, definitely. :)

    Bushcraft too popular?

Some articles on How To Leave No Trace on the main site perhaps? Split into different topics like walking, camping, cooking, perhaps. Or maybe not. I don't know.

    Bushcraft too popular?

I remember being taught the Country Code at a rural primary school. I also remember that most of the other kids there never quite got the hang of "leave the gate as you find it". And I remember that at my secondary school, in a small town with a large catchment area of small villages in...

    The price of fuel

I've never used the car to get to countryside anyway - I find it very limiting, I've got to finish in the same place I started, at the car. I either use my feet or public transport, much more freedom that way. :)

    In despair

I've never got a job from an interview, so I don't know how much help I can be. I get jobs through job agencies. They do put you through an interview, but if you're lucky it's just a typing test and then a "what sort of job do you want / how far will you travel / when can you start" thing...

    alone in the woods

My three major things to do are eating, listening and thinking (though eating is seasonal depending on what's around). If I get restless then I'll read, or sing, or climb trees. Or poke about in the undergrowth to find interesting little insects or other creepy-crawlies (if dark, then...

What colours to wear when one doesn't want to disturb the wildlife

Douglas Adams once observed that to rhinos, a worrying sight is simply something to smell for - like to him, a worrying smell is simply something to look for. If he doesn't see the cause of the worrying smell, he'll probably just ignore it, and in the same way, if a rhino doesn't smell the cause...

    Raw Food, Meat, Plants Etc

I don't need to be hungry to eat raw broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage and lettuce. I think that they're (the farmed vegetables this is!) far superior eaten raw, especially the stalks. :D Same with carrots, and I'm developing a taste for raw parsnip too. :D Haven't yet found (well, positively...

    Nomadic vegetarian?

Well I'm sort-of veggie and have been for about 8-ish years now I think. I'm "sort-of" because I will eat meat from animals that I know have had a good life and been humanely killed so the occasional bit of venison or rabbit from culls is fine by me. I only eat it a few times a year, maybe two...

    Powdered Egg and Tinned Cheeses

Well my powdered egg came from Tesco (look very hard in all areas close to the home baking section, in a big store, not one of those expensive little petrol station jobbies), and I haven't yet found a supermarket that doesn't stock powdered milk, although they do put it in different places...

    Oh, oh, oh!

How long is a piece of string? :) I've walked through bracken taller than me with bare arms, short socks, no insect repellant, in woodland very near the New Forest, and only found one tick on me which hadn't even dug itself in. I've had on 100% DEET and lain down on a village green for ten...

Ray Mears Hits Back at Anti 4x4 Lobby

This is a thought I just had. I haven't thought it through properly. Just wondered if discussing it might help... Raise tax on petrol (I mean fuel when I say petrol, wouldn't want to discriminate against diesel and LPG fuelled vehicles...) bought in cities? Problems I've thought of so far...
