I picked all the green walnuts I could reach to prevent the entire crop being stolen by the grey squirrels again. I dont have the time or inclination to do anything with them so took them to my friend at the local W.I to pickle them. I will no doubt recieve a jar or two as thanks.
Flipping heck john are the same ones you showed on British Blades in the olden days?
I just looked in and noticed I started this thread almost exactly 19 years ago!
Actual bugle is quite rare around here and the lecturer that I had for my RHS exam refered to most invasive blue flowered plants on lawns as bugles and I have had a life long confusion that I have ignored until your correction, Thanks Broch!
Not really but according to some blue bugle is the plant you pictured. Others call it red dead nettle.
I have spent lots of time trying to establish what two plants folks is talking about. We have an alternative rsd dead nettle later in the summer. Blue bugle should be wild sage.
Or you could just carry a bowsaw. If your bright enough, you wouldn't put yourself in such a predicament that you need a 'survival saw' let alone one that held your trousers up.
In the olden days, when folk didn't have to carry a huge rucksac we had a saying about learning stuff. it was 'the more you carry in your head, the less you have to carry on your back.'
Mattock handles are like pick handles and slip down a shaft the same. My mattocks are always mounted on pick handles as they are the same. You dont even need to be able to use a knife or sandpaper. If 36'' is too long get a friend to use a saw to shorten it.
If your not in a rush I can cut you some. To find a thick bit may take a week or 4 as we are in Lockdown and not meant to travel unless for work but as Nice65 says, theres loads in the hedges down here and I clear a footpath or two................
