    Head Torch-Best for the Money

It is German and can allegedly be seen from orbit (well alright 3000m - allegedly) but I do rate my LED Lenser headfire. I was camping with some mates and we faced the trip back from the pub down pitch-black paths through the woods. Although they had previously poked much fun at my head torch...

    What brimmed weather-proof (waxed?) hat?

Just acquired one and I like it a lot - very scrunchable/ foldable, waterproof and I don't look quite as 'Lord of the Rings' as I do in my woollen Swanndri. I love my Swanndri very much though and don't care if I look a bit Middle-Earth :D

    DD Travel Hammock shoddy work!!!!!

In DDs defence I have read a few threads here (no links sorry) where badly QA'd kit got sent out to customers and when alerted Nick & co moved to rectify the situation asap. I have a Travel myself which arrived with faint chalk marks but thankfully no other defects. It's a disappointing that we...

    There's an app. for that

Yeah Starwalk is really nice, even though I don't have the digital compass. I also have TreeID which isn't bad - it's got an OK function to ID trees based on their features such as height, bark, leaves, etc but haven't really used it much yet.

    waxing the unwaxed

Cheers for the tip; I really liked the look of them and for just over 20 notes for supergrade standard you can't really go wrong. Add on a tenner for the Barbour wax dressing and you could be looking at a DIY top trump waxed jacket for under £35 - I'm sorely tempted although I know I don't need...

    waxing the unwaxed

Yeah me too - Endicott's do an old British 60 patt combat jacket for a bargain which I think would be very suitable for this type of experiment. Not sure about trousers though - can you even buy waxed trousers commercially? Never seen 'em and assume they wouldn't be too comfortable? I could be...

    Dynamo Radio

I've got the second one pictured above in helixpteron's reply and it's pretty good. If you want you can keep winding and it just keeps on storing the charge for longer playback. As he's pointed out it has a USB port from which you can charge lots of other things like phones - I haven't had to...

    Hammock Cocoon, First impressions...

Mk 2 Coccoon owner here; great pics & words!! Been out in mine down to -4 sleeping in just boxers & t shirt and was very comfortable; they won't suite everyone but I think they're the business. I'm sure you'll enjoy your trips out in your one boiledbeef - post up some more pics when you do!

    Excellent jacket/trouser combo

SASS SAS OG smock for me in the end - although the Stalker is nice, I thought the MOLLE-type straps were a bit too 'army', along with the velcro patches. Would be interested to hear how you get on with it if you end up ordering one Dougster. No connection to SASS, etc, etc but I must say the...

    Reindeer Parka heads up

Cheers Toddy - it's precisely for this reason that I like hanging around here! As for wolverines themselves, regardless of their predatory behaviour which I'm sure makes herders/ farmers hate them, you have to admire the fight in them. These guys are seriously tough customers and will take on...

    Bushcrafting in Hampshire

Hi James - your suggestion sounds great and I would definitely still be up for coming to visit. Some instruction would be a really good way to spend some time at your place and I would love to do some tracking, although I think a masterclass would be beyond me! (only done a morning's intro at a...

Jerked Liver? Can it be done?

I like jerky, I like liver, I have a dehydrator - I reckon I'll give this a go this weekend actually :) I'll post up the results when I've done a taste test. assuming of course I don't end up in A&E

    Reindeer Parka heads up

Hi Toddy. I hope I didn't come across as being disapproving or sanctimonius because that's certainly not my position. Personally I do eat meat and have no problem with the humane taking of animals to make use of them. I too consider myself a realist and I consider animals from the perspective of...

    Reindeer Parka heads up

I too was amazed to find out about the (probably) unique property of wolverine fur making it ideal for framing hoods. Unfortunately it seems there aren't that many of them around any more :( http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8494000/8494397.stm

    Hammock Down Underquilt/Blanket

Wow - loving your work!! I use a Dent-Willoughby Coccoon which I like very much but had to comment on this little number; I can only guess at how warm it must be... nice kit mate

    Excellent jacket/trouser combo

Yep the smock does look very nice. Funnily enough I've just been considering a SASS OG smock (the 'ventile-like' one) - what do you peeps think about the different cloths being used for the 2? I must say the SASS stuff seems better, although they might be jazzing it up a bit? SASS also do a...

    Any Advice On Hammocks?

Hi Arri. There's a few options for your rucksack - some people like a quick and dirty (or nice and posh) tripod made from 3 branches; lash together, stick under tarp and hang rucksack from apex. Personally, I prefer a small cheap netted hammock which I rig under my sleeping one - it's more than...
