The book reminds me of RM's book Bushcraft, the big folio sized edition. Lots of lovely pictures makes it more of a coffee table reference and inspiration book than a field guide. I'm not sure how that is going to translate into kindle format
I can vouch for the quality of work and service from Dixie's. Lumbar mod would likely not be worth it if you are not planning on big weight, you'll not be chafing from a light load. Did look and feel good on the demo Bergen in the shop though. I got my old Roc modded with wider straps and have...
Collins book is very good - these are well worth a look too:

@ Bilmo - brilliant - many thanks for that. Looks far lighter and more grey than I thought. Hmm - might well go for olive after all.
@ Nonsuch - ta - I just spotted a smock on ebay that must be Bronze then. Thanks
Booked in to see him in Llandudno. Seen him twice before and have been impressed with his public speaking both times.
I've read the autobiography and found it a good book. Given how much he normally keeps his cards close to his chest, there are some surprisingly candid bits and snapshots...
Tussock by a country mile - fantastic neutral natural shade, sits well in many environments, with no military overtone too - a sort of olive / coyote tan mix
does anyone have pictures of garments in either of these 2 colours? I'm trying to compare with olive.
I've seen the swatches on the ventile site - but I think seeing a made-up garment would show better.
many thanks
because you need to round the piece for turning as well as possible - or suffer massive chatter which feels nasty when turning, knackers your fine chisel edge, and can throw the piece off centre. Generally not helpful when learning to turn. You can faff with your axe, far easier with draw knife...
absolutely - with only stone and bone tools, wearing buckskin and foraging alng the way.... and goodness only knows what would happen if one used a hybrid tarp/natural shelter - probaly cause some black hole or just end the universe there and then ;-)
my opinion - your opinion. That's the web for you. I just don't like having one trick pony gear. I have a good tarp, a good sleeping bag and a good mat. If planning to be in trees I take a hammock, if elsewhere, I'll take a bivy bag. Same weight and bulk either way. If out with a hammock and no...
a huge amount of bulk for a problem that can mostly be solved using different pitching and substituting other gear that is smaller, more multi-functional, and likely to be carried anyway.
if you are intending to use a lathe, you will also need a shave-horse, so best factor that one in to. My lathe has upright poles with a bungee, rather than a flexing pole to the back - saves space. The lathe is the Mike Abbott pattern - double board bed with poppets running between. If making a...
ditch the under-quilt (ridiculous bits of gear) and use a kip mat in the hammock instead. If very very cold, maybe stretch to taking some cut-down foil-coated bubble wrap insulation in addition (mountan marathoners use it as a stand-alone kip mat). As you are using a 3m tarp, pitch the hammock...
