    wood signs

Pallets are often made of Poplar which is a very soft wood and easy to carve. I think it would make a great starting point if you choose to go down the carving route. You can get some very nice results just using the combination of 2 chip carving knives, rather than all the different shaped...

    Wood roof shingles

I make cleft shingles (shakes), but have trouble getting suitable material. Because they are split out radially from the centre on the log and then remove the sapwood, you need something of at least 20 inches diameter to make it worthwhile (with oak). It also needs to be dead straight at knot...

    Cleaving/riving & splitting

In my neck of the woods cleaving would be controlled splitting, often in the cleaving break. So i'd cleave out fencing rails, lathes, shingles, bow blanks.... But i'd definatley split firewood. I'd split a log into billets for firewood with a sledge and wedges, but I reckon i'd cleave that same...

Hard wearing, everyday, trudging through mud boots

Thanks for the replies. Some good ideas there. I've just ordered a pair of m59 boots with the rubber foot. Managed to find a pair on ebay for £12.99! Definately worth a try. Thanks quietone

Hard wearing, everyday, trudging through mud boots

I live and work in the woods and on building sites and am in boots 99% of the time. So obviously i'm pretty hard on them. For the last 3 years i've been wearing chainsaw boots as they cover all the bases - steel toes, waterproof, high leg... But my current pair are starting to fall apart and...

Flint tools with a modern twist

Interesting take on an ancient technology. Not really particularly useful, but theres certainly something artistic about it. http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/8/view/24124/modern-stone-flint-tools-by-ami-drach-dov-ganchrow.html

    Apprenticeship Help

Stuey, I understand your concern, but I am certain I am not being fleeced here. I volunteer regularly at the Cherry wood project, and I feel that to be able to live and work there full time for a year would be an invaluable experience for me. Accommodation and food will be provided and I hope to...

    Apprenticeship Help

Hello, I am a young craftsman based in the West Country, scratching a living from carving spoons, cups, Box wood crochet hooks, and other treen. I am fascinated by traditional crafts and woodland management and am determined that I will make a living from these things. Because of this I have...

    Pipe

I made this pipe from (left to right) cherry, leather, oak, copper and holly! I used an electric drill for hole down the shaft, and a dremel style tool for the bowl. A lot of work, but very satisfying to make a composite item like this.

    Scandinavian breakfast woodenware

Gorgeous! Especially the sycamore cup. Such lovely contrast between the colours. I'd love to find meself a fresh burl one day. I carved a bowl from an almond burl last year when I was living in spain, but it was dead and I had to burn out the majority of it as it was just so hard. A real labour...

    Wood Pellet Stove

Fair enough mate. It does have potential to be a useful versatile fuel.

    Wood Pellet Stove

Seems to work well, but why use pellets? I can understand them for hopper fed boilers, where standard sizing is required but is it really necessary here? There is nothing on the website about where their wood is sourced from. Could well be tropical hardwood... Wouldn't it make more sense to use...

    Lightweight rigid tent poles

Yeah the fishing poles is something I have concidered. Would be beautifully light but, also very expensive for 4 poles. Cheers

    Collapsible water vessels

I think maybe a solid plastic one is going to be the option really, but space is at an absolute premium as its going in a bike trailer.
