    Camera spec for macro/close-up/arty farty

i'd love to have a G12, but there's no way i'd spend £400 on a compact at this point- it'd go towards probably a new sigma 70-200 f/2.8. that said, if someone doesn't have an SLR to begin with- or does and can afford to drop £400 on a "just in case" companion, it might not be such a bad idea...

    Camera spec for macro/close-up/arty farty

a compact that'll do macro? easy. look at the canon powershot series. they're normal compact sized cameras, have semi/fully-manual modes like SLRs, most have a close-focus of 1cm, come in largely under £200- and some under £100- and basically do everything you want. the best one i used was a...

    Whiyby Abbey

nice exposure, just a little too heavy on the saturation and vignette, i think. i feel my eyes straining to look "through" the vignette. i do want to get out to whitby though at some point before too much longer. always an excellent subject. :D

    First pine needle brew

just don't mistakenly use hemlock if you're anywhere that it grows! looks the same but the branches and needles are arranged differently, i believe. i did that once... no ill effects because i made barely any (what would fit in the torn-off bottom half of a discarded - :twak: - 12oz drinks can)...

FIRE: Made with only 'Birch Fungus', 'The Sun'.. and a 'TIN CAN'!!

did they really? i don't remember that episode, and i've seen them all... i'm going to have to investigate now. thanks. :)

    Compact Camera Recommendations?

i always have a compact in my pocket, and it's always a canon powershot (i'm a confirmed canon man). i loved my A620 with its 4x zoom, 1cm macro and swivelling LCD screen, but when it died i replaced it with an A4...30, i think, because it was cheap at the time. still has the 1cm macro though...

FIRE: Made with only 'Birch Fungus', 'The Sun'.. and a 'TIN CAN'!!

the can bottom needs polishing. the survival way is chocolate, but metal polish would work. he neglected to mention that, but otherwise, it's a genuine technique. never tried it though. maybe i'll give it a shot in the summer.

    How To Make: Fire Torches?

made one a year ago in a "i'm bored, let's make something" kitchen raid from a wooden spoon, lamb and beef fat (drained from a couple of dinners' mince) and kitchen roll as a wick. burned bright for 10, maybe 20 minutes- we only used one layer of fatty kitchen roll too. i fancy doing it again...

nice photos. goodjob you seem to like shape/tone/texture, have you tried any black and white stuff yet? with the levels tweaked in photoshop, you can get some amazing images.

Friends build an igloo to shelter from the weather - VERY JEALOUS!

not sure how "brave" it is, but it looks like an excellent construction. they said they lit a fire but it filled up with smoke because the chimney wasn't effective enough... don't the inuit use oil lamps or candles to heat/light igloos for that reason? plus a fire would suck up all the oxygen...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzeY1usbiVk is the one i keep looking at... one of these days i'll actually get some flint and steel to try it out. edit: hmm, no video embedding. :( edit2: beaten to it... that's what i get for only skimming the thread.

DIY Weather Forecasting /Traditional weather signs

:lmao::lmao::lmao: i cracked up at that picture. i've only heard "red sky at night, shepherd's delight; red sky at morning, shepherd's warning." which ties into the rhyme that SOAR posted.

    C##P Silva Lighters & Service

i don't see turboflame mentioned here... my turboflame II lasted 3 years with very poor treatment. at £3 a year, i'd definitely get one again.

a bit of advice for a newbie

    a) cut the mat down. if you fit inside an army bag and it doesn't, it's not you or the bag that's the wrong size. ;)
