Dam it after reading about the fun you all had last time I’m seriously tempted but unfortunately I’m working all that weekend. I have been trying to organise a Hampshire meet again but sadly no response this time around.:(

Have glucose for the perchlorate, glycerin for the permanganate and also potassium nitrate, magnesium carbonate, zinc oxide, copper oxide, iron oxide. Just need some aluminium filings or powder and we can make thermite :) lol

I know, I have aluminium sheet. I'll fire up the belt sander with a plastic bag on the extractor haha.

think it needs to be powdered ally... ebay has it :p

and erm yes... you certainly do have the pyromanical needs covered! lol

should have my new lickle 2m/70cm transceiver by then, tis only 2 watts and i wont have my ham ticket in time so can only really use as a receiver, but can pop up high and see about dialing into the local repeaters and see if there are any other sad geeks like me on the air :p

Hi guys, really looking forward to some fun and jolity in the woods ! thanks for those posting their intentions, several have contacted me by phone and are coming.

Dave, Badger and Foxy are planning on coming at present .

Whats with all the pyrotechnics stuff ? should i warn the neighbours of the impending light, noise and smell show ?

I am trying to secure the services of Jean Michel Jarre , to make the evening complete....

Warnings spoil all the fun...I will only bring a small amount of purple flaming stuff, I don't currently have the hazchem plates for the car, so limited on transport quantity :) If you're getting JMJ I'm getting Kylie :p

none of those pyros make noise, smell is minimal and short lived (only the thermite really has any smell and that isnt strong unless you add in flouride compunds and then you will die from flourine gas poisoning.... smell then is of little concern)

as we have this conversation in public, thermite is stable and safe until ignited, once ignited its burning at a few thousand degrees and will burn through anything. you cant really extinguish but if needed to control, smother with lots of sand, do not use water as the heat will release hydrogen from the water and the whole lot can explode sending lumps of molten iron shrapnel far and wide

if you do want a sound and light show, i have now upgraded my PA to 3kw and have the use of a very fancy dmx laser and some nice other lighting effects (sadly yet to get my 300mW green laser from the usa that will cut plastic and set fires :( ) so if you want this Ivan, let me know, will need the use of a 4x4 to get the kit in and a minimum 5kw generator which i aslo dont possess (yet :p )

edit: oh yes, thermite burns VERY brightly, you should avoid looking directly at it much like arc welding

If Adam is bringing kylie I will be bringing Jason donavon and we can complete the duo.
I think I have a few detonators lying around in the garage from my black ops days so will definatley be making a few quarry's on the moors any chance Ivan of you building and anderson shelter very soon sounds like the weekend is gonna be a blast lol

As ever Jon, you are correct. However...copper oxide and potassium nitrate and sugar make a smoke bomb, so plumes of grey/black smoke could give off a few nasty smells. Potassium perchlorate and aluminium makes flash powder, which produces a loud "bang" and high grade potassium permanganate and glycerin (like the crystalised stuff I have) produces a large cloud of smoke on ignition, (I know, I have video evidence :p). But I shall only bring sensible chemicals with me, they will be used in an educated and controlled manner, and handled with due care and caution.

Pyrotechnics and chemicals are not toys. Although the results can be interesting, every precaution must be taken for every eventuality, no matter how small the risk of damage or injury.

If you want a shelter, the debris shelter is still standing :p not saying it will stand up to ordnance though....

and you sir are even more correct!

note to self, when replying to forum posts, ensure you have actually read the content of the post rather than just think you have read it........

Hi guys, I've just rejoined these forums and was curious about these meetups. I'm based in Cornwall, not too far from Dartmoor. Are they open to all and sundry? I actually can't make the weekend in question as I'm booked on a bushcraft weekend course on the same dates, but was just fishing for information for the future...

Hi Deaner , i cant speak for all meets but if you see my name associated with a gathering you would be more than welcome to come along and have a look, the whole point of a meet is for like minded souls to share skills and knowledge, regardless of experienceand most of all to have a good time .
if you look at previous threads with Dartmoor in the title it will give you more of an idea , hope that helps.
