Well although watching the usual tv stuff and reading books and camping i'm fairly new to all this, but have decided to take the plunge and have booked my first course for my bday next year, but what i want to know is are there some places better than others for getting stuff, the whole lot, like price, delivery, customer service etc??

most definatly and lakeland bushcraft is one of these brilliant places and well mark who runs and owns it is member here under the title of lurch.

now for more specialist gear like hammocks and what well you will find them as you go along cos theres millions of good shops who provide ausome service but as u can imagine theres double that in crap ones

If you mean kit suppliers the first two I call on for anything are Tamarack and Lakeland Bushcraft

If you register as a full member on BCUK you'll receive a discount at Tamarack too.

What sort of stuff are you after ?

Who have you booked your course with btw ?

I'm doing the root skills course with bushcraft ventures as i'm up in the north east its not too far, i've got a kit list somewhere for that course, but ultimately i wanna have all the right gear for going out all year round, just wanting to have an idea where to get it so i can start buying it gradually instead of trying to stump up a huge lump sum, also would be good to know what i needn't bother buying new or at all (if anything)?

Maybe stick the kit list up Danny so we can see what they suggest.

It's usually pretty basic essentials depending on the course length and criteria.

If you're planning to do quite a bit of it in the future anyway then

danny inregards to kit it depends on you and reason for this is

do u want to light weight tent

or are u willing to bivi

or are you going to join us swingers and hammock

also a piece of advice the only three bits of kit that really really need to be 100% perfect are

your boot

your sleeping bag

and your ruck sack

why well yout either in your boots or your bed and your ruck sack well if its crap you aint going to enjoy using it to carry all the rest and well that can make or break a trip.

now in regards to all years it is possible just keep asking questions and reading this site

This is what i've been given......

rucksack (about 65 litres)
tent or hoochie
warm sleeping bag
sleeping mat
bivi bag*
blanket*
comfortable outdoor clothing
comfortable walking boots
spare shoes
water proof jacket
water proof trousers*
warm hat
gloves and wide brim hat (winter and summer)*
one set of spare clothing
personal medication and first aid
wash kit and spare towel
torch and spare batteries
cup, plate or bowl and cutlery
1 litre water bottle
notepad and pencil*
fold up chair*

items marked * are optional

Most of the stuff i'll get, dont know much about bivi bags, so i'll prob get a cheap mountain tent for this course and go from there. My end goal is to get the skills and knowledge i need, a canadian canoe and set away for weeks here and there through the year, i've canoed since being a child so this will combine it all hopefully, but i wanna make sure i've got all the basics first (knowledge more so) then for my 40th......a few years off yet, i'm going to tap the misses for a full arctic expedition.

I like the idea of basic really, tarp, hammock....easy up and easy down and move on, obviously i might change my view on this as i gain experience.

Looking at that list I'd echo what Lannyman says about going for the army surplus stuff.

You can pick up a DD tarp and goretex army bivvy for around £50 which I'd prefer rather than being couped up in a tent for a week. The rest of the list is pretty standard and it sounds like your food is laid on so no need to take cooking gear which is a bonus.

Yeah ebay or on here is probably your best bet, maybe give Kev a call at Endicotts and see what he has in. Explain your getting some basic kit together and he'll probably sort you out with a nice package deal.

The army ones are popular because they're built to last and will stand up better to woodland fun than the lighter weight hiking alternatives.

Spot on, the clothing aspect of it is fine i pretty much have all that stuff from field sport activities, and i've got a tent for family camping stuff, so prob no point adding another tent when i can get a whole different experience whilst out alone, speed and ease are the main things i want from setting a camp, so i can get on enjoying the time out there.

Cheers for all help, be prepared to get bombarded with kit questions and the like for the next few months. Whats the full membership thing on here??

it sounds like you are nearly there mate tbh........all i would add as shewie said a tarp and bivvi bag, i dont tend to hammock as it seems a bit of extra kit and faffin around, however im going to try it soon, i dont want to spend the money though so im making my own...lol.....

as for stoves you can make one from tins and even use tins to cook in like i do or Tesco non stick set for £5, does the job...... but thats just what i do......
