The weather was very good (bordering north norwegian summer temps) and I decided I would spend the day out.
My area of choise was Hopen mountain and its old copper mines as I had never been there before.
I packed my rucksack, and after a couple of kilometers by bicycle I began to climb the mountain.
The spring is a little later this year than last and there was a little snow on the trail. Some flowers (Anemone nemorosa) began to raise their head though.
After an hour I found this shelter. Built last year I read in the guestbook left in a box on the wall.
The shelter had a kettle, tripod and firewood.
I only sat down for a short puff on my pipe though.
More snow up against the top of the mountain. The board has a map and some history of the old mine.
The mines was mainly in use from 1900 to 1909, but there has been some mining in the 1890`s and a short attempt during the WWI.
The mine entrances was sadly covered with snow. Except this hole.
It is said to be a vertical shaft connecting the upper mine to the lower one. I didn`t want to go too close, but I tossed a rock inside and I couldn`t hear it hitting anything.
I`m going up later in summer checking out the mine.
Some pics showing the mountains.
After a quick meal (army ration), some coffee and a pipe I was on the move again.
I found a reindeer antler and took it with me. Could be of use someday.
The walk down was by another trail than the trek up. This trail mostly went trough a Spruce forrest. But I managed to get an overwiev when reaching the power line to the city.
I found a nice straight spruce I will use as a canoe pole. I`ve stashed it away on a secret location to dry.
I was out for 6 hours and IMO they were all well spent.
