As I love some luxury I use 6cm thick and 200cm long self inflating Nordic Camping, sold at Makro (don't know if that exists in the UK). They cost less than 40€ and also exist in different sizes/thicknesses. I sleep better on them than in my bed.

Yep - agree. Thermarests are fantastic but the Alpkit prices are unbeatable!

I would recommend that you take a repair kit (strong speed tape or dedicated kit) because they aren't much cop if you get a hole in them.

Finally, check the surface of the ground before you lie on it - small sharp rocks/twigs/etc will punture the mat.
