Really chuffed today to get a call from Tir Coed offering me a place on their three month Sustainable Woodland Management course in the beautiful Elan Valley. :)

http://tircoed.org.uk/accredited-training-courses

The course started this week but someone has dropped out and I was on the reserve list. The course which is free is primarily aimed at getting younger people in the area the skills needed for a career in forestry, conservation etc. but they are happy to let old(er) f@rts fill any spare places. :)

Great news; perhaps you will be able to share your new found knowledge when you've completed it :)

I suspect that the course will just bring me up to the level of understanding of many on here but will be happy to share any insights! :)

Enjoy yourself. I'd be curious to hear a summary of the course as I couldn't find much out from the link.

I'm always interested to hear other ideas for woodland products other than firewood or charcoal.

The syllabus seems to have disappeared now that the course has started.

Hurdle making (or at least hurdle making courses) seems to be making a comeback

and a relative recently went to meet her maker in one of these lovely wicker coffins.

Well it is a beautiful place to be all year round, are you down in the round house close to the Elan Village?

I was up there yesterday ducking the sleet and rain capturing images of the dams all flowing over...

The roundhouse was built by participants on a Tir Coed course last summer and was used as a base for a pole lathe building course I was lucky to get on in the autumn.

Although the TC HQ is in Elan Village, I think the actual course is nearby.

Really looking forward to it - just need the weather to be like today on course days for the next few weeks. :)

Ooh, what did you make on the pole lathe, any photos? How did you get on with it?

By the time we finished the lathes, we only had half a day so just practice pieces - in my case, definitely more practice required! ;)

Not with Maurice Clother was it?

I spent three days building a pole lathe with him in April last year.

Forget his surname but his first name was Wil.
