I enjoy picking up bits of steel along the side of the road to use for future projects. I recently found an old broken handle from a pair of pliers and decided to forge a carving knife....Carved a spoon with it and discovered my new favorite knife....

Excellent. That's why tool edges look like they do.
Somebody used their head to make a knife that functions well.
I'm a little surprised at the edge length. I'd be happier with less than 1.5".

Some day, can we see your forge? Must not be too complicated?
I have several coffee cans of ruined and rusty files to play with.

Your new favourite knife - until such time as you forge yourself another, which might then become your new favourite knife!

Seriously though, that is a lovely looking knife, and the spoon is great too!.

Fantastic thread title! You've done a great job on both the knife and spoon, but its the concept that most grabs me: True recycling.

I love when a little bit of discarded material is turned into something REALLY good and given a whole new lease of life.

How did you know it would make a decent blade? Spark test? Tester piece?

Thanks so much for the kind feedback.

Favorite knife is right, Muddypaws....and you're also right...until the next one... ha.

Toddy...wombling as a life skill.... I love it... :)

Greencloud....I knew it would be high carbon because it was a tool handle. But I did spark test it to be sure. I also did an interrupted water quench to be doubly sure it got nice and hard.
