Good Afternoon People!

at the beginning of September I am going to Stora Le in Sweden for a week long canoe trip. I'm trying to make a map of the area...in the UK I usually just use Bing Maps...switch it to OS mode and print screen it into a word document and print it...easy. I can't seem to find an online source of OS maps for Sweden where you don't have to buy anything to view it. Does anyone know of any?

We're also going to try our hand at hobo fishing, very basic set up, line around a tin can job! And just sitting on the islands in the evening, more as something to do rather than to feed us! I have no experience fishing so I was wondering what do I put on the end of the line? Just a hook and worm, hook with weight, hook with float, a lure? Etc. You see where I'm going with this. I don't want to buy a rod or anything because I don't want it taking up room in my luggage, and considering it's just for a bit of fun and will probably never get used again it would be a waste of money for me.

Thanks for your help
Kind Regards

Jay

You should be able to buy a map at the same place where you will buy the first fishing permit. If they do not have any maps, they will be able to tell you where you can buy them.
I checked and the lake is divided in several independent fishing ‘areas’ where each area needs an own permit. It seems to be a well cared for lake.
Lots of large pike, and large perch.
The salmon and trout are protected during the time you plan to be there.
Good luck with your trip!

You can buy the two permits on www.fiskekort.se
Search there on ‘stora le’ and you will find it.

Fishing: hook and worm at end of line, a float above. A non lead weight between hook and float.
Distance between hook and float so the bait is halfway between bottom and surface.
Fishing from shore I would say 45 cm or so.
Hand casting is enough to get several species, specially Perch. Very tasty cleaned then pan fried in butter!

...in other words, you want help pirating map data the way you do OS data from Bing? :nono:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/maps/product/print-rights

However, you are in luck with regard to Sweden. There is a service from Lantmäteriet that gives you free on-line access with rights to print for personal use down to 200m zoom:

View Ranger, a mobile phone app, allows you to pay for individual map tiles at 1:50,000 for Sweden, so you only need to buy the ones you need.

I wish you all the luck in the world for fishing. I have tried it with rod and line several times and have caught but a couple of small pike in the bays. I am told most pike are caught by trolling in the middle of the lake. Fishing around the north end of Skotton was not productive when I was there in September. Lovely evening, but no sign of fish of any kind. I was using lures, small Mepps spinners, which are usually good for perch, trout and small pike. Not sure that I would want to count on being able to find worms in the soil. The soil can be pretty thin, full of roots and may be dry.

At night, on the north side of Tronsholmen, we saw a lot of crayfish on the rocky bottom just off the bank. They quite liked the bits of sausage we tossed in. We did not have any means to catch them and I don't know what the law is regarding them.

Fishing shop in Ed is worth a visit, but has opening hours that might not work with your trip departure day.
Fiskespecialisten i Ed AB:
Jordbrovägen 15, 668 32 Ed, Sweden

another map source, not sure what the rights are and not crazy about the colour scheme.

Fishing from the shore only produces small-ish fish.
To get decent 9legal) size Pike you really need a boat to fish from. Outside the banks of Reed, around little islands with rocks and so on. Wintertime ice fishing with living bait produces nice Pike. (automated fishing device)

Thanks for the advice regarding fishing everyone! Probably not going to bother now! And thanks a lot for the links to maps C.Claycomb! Didnt realise wasnt allowed to print it. Surely its only "piracy" if i intend to sell/pass it on? If i have ready access to it on my phone, why is printing it to use myself for when I have no signal any different. Strange rule imo.

Now, I am going to recommend some illegal activity........
I very much like people to follow the laws and regulations when they visit my home country Sweden with the purpose of bushcrafting, but......

If you are careful, I think you should try the hobo fishing method anyway. You have never tried fishing, and that tech is basically 'very close to shore fishing'.
That close to the shore, all you will get are very small fish, maybe up to 4 inches long. Perch, Roach. "rubbish fish " we call them in Sweden.
I see no harm you trying it out. If you have a child with you, it will be so much more fun for them!

If you do fish and catch some, clean them, and fry on a pan in butter. Lots of bones, but tasty.

The reason I think it is OK to do this is that those small fish tend to overpopulate the lakes, and eat so much food the fish in general are lacking in food, and do not grow to o good size.
We call them " tusen broeder" which translated to "Thousand brothers'.
