Hi guys.
Skipping the obvious reply that you can never have enough blades in your life. What is a reasonable and usefull number of blades to have with you on a typical trip to the woods, let say 3-5 days (with you, not in your collection at home). Let's leave the wood processing tools like saws and axes etc out of the question. I'm asking about your belt knifes, neck knifes, pocket knifes, skinning knives, backup knives, throwing knives etc.

I have a 6" custom fixed in the making as my primary bushcraft knife for all camp chores and to assist wood processing. Also a standard mora in the kitchen kit for food processing and as a backup. And there is a blade on my multitool if I manage to loose the two above.

So what is your set of blades that cover your needs?

I just carry a Mora Companion HD and a Opinel as a 'back-up'. I personally cannot see a scenario where I would break my trusty Mora or indeed loose it. It always sits of my belt and it goes straight back in the sheath after each use.

However, it is better to be safe than sorry so I always keep the Opinel in my pack just in case.

Usually i have
Mora classic or Wantaforge
Sak farmer

Maybe my leathermans and a kershaw lock knife

Most big stuff i use hatchet on so i dont "need" a beasty knife

The sak and the leathermans are more due to the extra tools than the knife blade

The kershaw is for food prep as i can wash it easier than the mora or wanta forge

I'm usually with the following when out camping

1. a main knife (usually my sypdie bushcrafter but can be a mora clipper)
2. SAK farmer alox
3. a leatherman

I've never need more than those three.

Oh, there's a leatherman squirt P4 clipped on with my car keys but that goes everywhere with me and is used pretty regularly day to day

Custom belt knife & my SAK Champ also on the belt. I have never found the need for anything else unless I was specifically going out in the woods to do a task that needed a specialist tool.
if I'm not travelling (i.e. staying at one camp and don't need to keep it light) I will usually have an axe.

One heavy blade for main wood and shelter work 8-12 inch with some mass, one mid size if needed (depends how adaptable you large blade is) say mora garberg, kansbol, 2000, and mora eldris or anything small and handy for food only. a medium blade would work for this too so I get by most times with just two.

3.

Mora Companion in the pack or at the camp, favourite folder in my pocket (currently a Svord peasant mini), and a SAK Classic in my wallet (stashed away).

Just need one cutting edge = an old Kershaw folder, was a family gift some 30+ years ago.
Bow saw and some sort of hatchet to do the jobs they do.
The power saw stays in the truck and gets used to make the road open from dead falls.

I confess that if you shook my packs upside down, there might be couple of other knives
fall out. All folders.

I always have something in my pocket. Usually a SAK but possibly a medium stockman's knife. I keep a few knives in the truck at all times but what I take out will vary with the trip. Maybe a Buck 110 locking blade hunter; maybe a fixed blade, or maybe the machete.

If it's a multiday trip or a day out where I plan to do some buscrafting/firelighting I'll generally I'll take a medium sized fixed blade & a small parang. If It's a quick bimble generally a folder, mostly my Lansky World Legal which is more than enough for most tasks.

I always have a small backup blade, my dinky little Doug Ritter RSK MK5 which lives in my fire kit and is ideal for making shavings or feathersticks.

For me it would be 2 blades, main fixed blade either a TBS Boar, Mora companion or a Helle BraKar and a Boker techtool 3. Also alway have a axe with me but that's it as for cutting tools

Nepalese Kukri for the heavier tasks and the Mora for everything else.

I do sometimes take the crook and whittling knives if I anticipate having idle time to play but most of the time , just those 2 cover all my needs .

Since being gifted that Kukri I don't even bother with an axe anymore ... No need .
