Anyone know what the best Steel is to use for firesteel (strike a lite) and what Rockwell hardness?
I've made them from O1 and hardend with a blowlamp and bucket of water but I'm thinking of making some of my design to sell.

old files are good you only have to harden the striking face no heed to do the whole thing I treated one the other week from carbon steel and it sparks like a grinder lol

O1 works fine over heat it a bit quench in oil
Temper not needed

A good for knife HT dosmt make a good striker

Interestingly a freshly laser cut piece of 01 will work as is. I assume it gets a sort of flash hardening as it gets cut. :dunno:

Old files are great too.
All the best
