A little tinder horn.

Well I had a spare coo horn (Isle of Lewis horn). I always wanted a horn snuff mull with silver top but the price is way out of my range. So, influenced by snuff mulls, I thought I'd play a bit.

The solid tip didn't extend that far so I couldn't, and didn't know how, to extend the curl further. Horn thistle on top of a burr elm lid. Something a wee bit different.

Question ... How do you hollow out the horn?

Cattle horns are hollow by nature. While they are still on the head there is a bone thingy inside them.

The horns are usually boiled before you get them and the bone core removed. The odd one I have has the bone in but come out easilly.

Thanks folks. Yes Toddy, polishes up well. I wonder if the heating process changes the colour of the horn at the tip. It's a little rustic in places but I really like tactile things. just need to find the next project!!!
