The League of Pipe smokers!

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (29th July - 10th August) available until April 6th, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
Glynn (GQ Tobacco's) is a lovely guy and does price his stock at what i would call sensible prices.
If you ever fancy a change of blends some of his own brand blends are amazing. They are usually quite high in the nicotine levels mind.
Found that out tryin his Swampflower blend. Needed to sit down after that un!

I buy my supplies from him or King of Smokes depending on what I'm after. Would love it if he got some of Morgan's Bare Bones series in.

I was interetsed in the bare bones modles mostly, the briar cigar was just interesting.

Do the bare bones models use decent briar or are they reject pipes that don't get the full colouring etc? I'd love to own one and watch it discolour over the years but I'd cry if my hard work went into a lemon..

Also, does anyone ehre buy from GQ? I've never heard of them and only www.thebackyshop.co.uk

Yeah i purchase all my tobacco n pipes from GQ.
He sells a nessmuk navy plug i helped develop too.
Other than that i have no connection with him.

+1 for GC tobaccos, being using them for my pipe baccy since a friend gifted me some Nessmuk Plug and the website was on the packet, never had any problems. I buy my handrolling baccy elsewhere though as last time I checked he only carried two brands, neither I like.

Do all sand blasted pipes have those large pits and cavities in the grain? and if this is the case are they just filled if such holes show up?

Can you give me some of the details/what it consists of on the nessmuk plug please mate!? I don't bother that much with plugs as alot of the bold flavours I like don't often show up in that form and I find they don't gp as far as ribbon or flake etc.

Pits and cavities are usually cause for the briar to be rejected from a pipe makers collection.they still smoke exactly the same.just not as aeathetically pleasing so dont tend to command the same high prices of artisan pipemakers custom stuff. Think of them as the mora of the pipe world if you will.
Nessmuk Navy plug is a rum topped brown flake
Its quite high in nicotine. The flavour lasts as does moisture (better than RR or flake for moisture). As for how long they last thats dependent on how thin you cut it

Even Morgan's Bare Bones will not be reject briar, the guy takes his pipes and quality seriously. I emailed his site about the mouthpiece in my briar being a wee bit loose & he replied personally first thing the next morning (California time).

Samon, the briar is a great outdoors pipe, my goto pipe on wet days. It's also a good pipe for going out with the lads - you can pre-load it, go with the smokers for their fag break, and cap it to put it out when the cigs are done, relight next break.

I'm very partial to a rum tobacco, will need to try the Nessmuk.

Hi all, loving this thread:)
Having smoked minature cigars for many years i am finding myself drawn towards smoking a pipe, but know nothing about pipes and their associated tobacco , so could anyone offer advice for a possibly prospective first time pipe smoker
cheers, Ian

A simple pipe, something affordable like a Missourri corn cob and what ever tobacco you like the sound/smell of. If you haven't had your nose in a tin of pipe tobacco imagine the flavours go from flavoured like anything (aromatics), sweet, nutty, spicy, petey, smokey etc etc and try to match the description of a tin to your potential taste preference.

I usually only a have a few different types of baccy in at one time but others have loads that may be happy to trade/sell a mix of smaples for you to try out.

I think Tommy is great for reviews and general chit chat about pipes: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHBr7x7nrZpzpGJIZ0neGPA/videos He also reviewed every pipe tobacco that you can buy from supermarkets and shops. Rather than specialist baccy shops.

If anyone wanted to try out the cigar pipe, Morgan's have collaborated with Missouri Meerschaum to produce a corncob version. $18.99 in the USA, worth asking GQ about getting some in, they stock both Morgan's and Missouri Meerschaum.

I
just got my latest GQ order through & I bought a corncob pipe to try, at £3.99 why not? Only had one smoke on it, and apparently you need 3 or 4 to break it in. A bit of a nutty flavour early on (this goes apparently) and then wood burning as it burned the tip of the wood shank where it comes into the chamber, this as well will go apparently. Drew well, lit well, very light & incredibly cheap. Do feel I need dungarees to keep the look though....

That's my current pipe and bacci. Although its actually Kendal twist blended with the black cherry. Gives it a bit more bite as I like aromatics but that blend is a touch too mild for me. I get mine from the Cuban cigar club, luckily its near my work and stocks a good range! Always use the spydie PM2 to cut the twist as its really slicey and I can get nice fine cut if I want it. And the .308 case on my keys gets used to tamp the tobacco down :)
