I have a couple of unused gas masks, just wondering if anyone knows what the dusty coating over them might be, also if there anything that might help make the rubber not smell so strong.

Agreed its Fullers Earth, used to absorb any liquid agent on the inside & outside face of the mask if removed or splashed.

Ahhh...that explains things:D

I inherited my grandfathers gas mask incl. container- it survived in extremely good condition from WWII, last time I saw it more then ten years ago before istrated my trip, wonder what my ***************relatives did with it (and the rest of my belongings....).....
