Nothing wrong with the sheath, just the wet moulding.

Just wet it out again, ( drop your sheath into cold water and leave it till the bubbles stop rising) then wrap your saw in cling film ( maybe smear vaseline on the metal bits too?) and put it in the sheath. Next, shape the leather to fit the saw as closely as you can. You can use your fingers but a smooth, rounded tool of some kind would be better, maybe a metal spoon handle?

Once you're happy with the result of your shaping and moulding, dry off as much water as you can with a towel or whatever, then either use a hair dryer or put it on a not too hot radiator to dry it properly.

If you're still not happy with the finished article, do it again. You can repeat the wet forming process a good few times before it gets a bit pointless but doing this with the same item over and over again means that you get to learn how to do it, without wasting time and money on making a new sheath each time.

You can be pretty rough pushing the leather where you want it to go, but any marks you make in the surface will almost certainly be impossible to remove, though you may be able smooth them out a bit.

If you treat it with bees wax you wont be able to re-form it so easily, so wait till your happy with the sheath before waxing it. Once you are happy with the finished item, you can wax it if you choose, it'll probably help keep the thing stiff and certainly repel water, plus you can polish it up by simply buffing with a boot brush. Dying it won't make any difference to the wet forming practice.

Good luck

Steve
