Its surprising how much car you can get for your money these days. If you dont mind age and know what you are looking for then you can get a bargain.
Lot of folk seem to only consider newer vehicles because of their fuel economy but when you weigh up the added road tax and extra fuel against the cost of the car..

My last two cars have been between £500 and a £1000 and both served me well for years without anything major. Then one day when they come back from their MOT and are not worth patching up they go to the big scrappy in the sky. Some newer models these days with a serious fault can set you back £1000`s in parts when outside or warranty where as I just buy another car and trade the old one in for scrap. Japanese man my self but low genuine mileage, well looked after and you are onto a winner.
I drove brand new company cars for the last 10 years or so before having to buy my own and I dont miss them one bit.

Paid just under a grand for my current 20 yr old Pajero, and considering the age not needed a lot of maintenance. Garage tried to extract £800 off me for a new fuel pump this year, but I wasn't having any of that.

It is the greenest way to drive if you think about it. Old cars can be terrific value for money. We bought a 2000 reg Ford Escort 7 years ago for £1000 one owner from new (the Brother in laws neighbor) with hardly anything on the clock. It has taken us all over the country and never seems to go wrong. We service it via my brother in law who admittedly is bordering on being a bit obsessive with greasing every nipple and checking every moving part but even taking that into consideration it has been rock solid. We as a family are outgrowing it now but I will be sad to see it go.

Got to agree, cheapest form of motoring. Just got me a Nissan primera r reg for £400 starts on the button, drives like a dream and can load it up with my fishing gear, camping gear. And best of all rubbish to the hilt to drop off at the local dump, opps sorry recycling centre.

Little bit of a downside the battery went completely flat, good news the guy we bought it from is going to fit a brand new Hi power battery for free.
