Found a log in a ditch. None of the 2 nearby trees looked similar.

Going to try and get a spoon out of out.

But what wood is it?

Vertical bark stripes. Greyish bark, fairly blonde colour, straight grain

Yep Looks like Ash to me too


Stoves lit - chuck it on will you? :D

The bark could be from a lots of species but the split along the grain looks a lot like ash.
Easier to carve green if you can but nice stuff none the less.

remember that fruity smell it is one of the diagnostic features as is the cut surface oxidising slightly pink as yours has. If it was greener it would be white when cut going quite bright pink an hour later.

Boil it, that is smaller bits split out of the log, not the whole log. Leave it to soak in the cooling water for a few days and it will be softer. You may need to leave it soaking for a bit longer depending on the sizes.
Not the ideal way but you should find it easier to work.
