The time has come the Bushcrafter said.. Light weight rucksacks. Most of my kit is old and ex-military at the age of 70

I bought a load of lightweight equipment last year - tent, cookware, sleeping pad. Total game changer but I didn't get as far as upgrading my rucksack, partly because the new tent is so compact that I can get by with a 25 litre rucksack I already have. Previously I was using a 65 litre ex...

Fiskars tools - are they plastic tat?

I've got 3 of the extendable pole pruners. Broke the blades on the first 2 but I've repurposed them for fruit picking etc. I haven't seen anything else as neat but wish the blades were stronger.

    What are you currently reading?

Currently reading A Canticle For Leibowitz which was one of the sources of inspiration for the Fallout franchise. The book opens with a monk scavenging from an underground bunker in a desert in post nuclear apocalypse USA with the looming threat of mutant creatures.

Amazon Prime - Have you quit?

It definitely captures the essence of the game but they've held back a lot of factions/creatures/etc for the next series. Might ditch Prime for a while now because there's not much else on it that interests me and the ads are annoying.

What wildlife did you spot today?

I saw a lizard which is a rare sight for me. The temperature was around 22 C so it scuttled away FAST.

    What are you currently reading?

Just finished Metro 2033 which deserves all the recognition it has received. There's great world building and a genuine sense of unknown terror while being poignant and philosophical many times too. At the other end of the scale I've finished Garth Merenghi's Terror Tome which continues very...

Fly tipping in general is a constant blight around here. For a more positive story of change for the better take a look at Bredhurst Woodland Action Group https://bwag.org.uk/

Thinking of getting into wood carving? Aldi offer!

I just used a metal vice on that occasion. I carved the bottom of the bowl first but left an extra tall 'foot' on the base which the vice could grip when it came to the hollowing out. There are other ways such as making a bodger's vice with some wood offcuts and a couple of wedges. A workmate...

Thinking of getting into wood carving? Aldi offer!

I made this matching pair, one on a lathe and the other by power carving. Interestingly they took about the same amount of time. I keep meaning to do a third all with hand tools.
