It is far more toxic than white spirit. The white spirit will defat/degrease your skin which is why it can sometimes feel like your skin is really dry if you dont rinse it off. Methanol on the otherhand goes through the skin and is toxic.

Methanol has a flashpoint of 11 degrees C, petrol is -21 degrees C.
Like most flammable liquids its normally the vapour just above the liquid which is the really flammable bit (has the right mixture of oxygen and fuel).
Important to remember that meths isnt methanol, it is a mixture of primarily ethanol (somewhere between 80-90%) and a much smaller amount of methanol (less than 5%). Pure methanol could have a very different reaction with the metals.
Sections 8 and 11 on the data sheets (I am referring to the one I provided the link for) gives information on toxicity and exposure guidelines (these are based on workplace exposure/chronic exposure). But these don't give those sort of specifics and unfortunately I am not medically trained so...
Had a look at these yesterday and came to the same conclusion...looks great but price is steep. If there are 2 stuck at the back of your cupboard then there are two willing buyers here!!
Correct advice is to wash it off immediately as it is toxic by skin contact (and every other type of contact!). Perhaps download a safety data sheet (e.g http://tinyurl.com/cwktvna) to have on hand incase of further accidents.
