I'm planning a trek from Machynlleth to Aberystwyth via Nant y Moch, Ponterwyd, Devil's Bridge and the Rheidol Valley. Off road as much as possible and probably 3 nights' wild camping on the way. Probably in April when the weather starts getting a bit better. Probably start on Friday and end on Monday. Date to be arranged, but not over Easter Weekend.

Anyone fancy coming along?

Depending on the dates I would be up for that too. My old stamping ground from 20 years ago.

I take it you have arranged the weather ;)

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks guys - I'll have a think about dates. Any preferences? I favour a Tuesday to Friday trip but I could do Friday to Monday (I use trains, and so try to avoid Saturday and Sundays).

Easter week is out, so We're looking at any time after Tuesday 13th April.

And, oh yes, I can almost guarantee the weather................. rain! But who cares?

OK, Nathan, you're on the possibles list.

Yes, it always rains in Wales at weekends........... and the rest of the week too.

But I can guarantee that our route will not be busy at any time....

My apologies. I have sent a reply now.

Not sure that my family dates will allow me to go but if not, I look forward to reading the postings afterwards.

Cheers,
Steve

OK, here's the plan..

The trip will take place from Friday 23rd to Monday 26 April.

I plan getting to Machynlleth on the train that arrives at 10:43 am. So if you're driving, you'd need to get there by 11am.

Get to Aber by 5pm Monday - there's a train then (or at least there was last September!) which will get you back to Machynlleth or wherever else in the world you want to go!

As we'll be wild camping and it may not be practicable to ask permission in advance, I hope everyone will have suitable shelter - bivvy/tarp or discrete coloured tents.

I favour sleeping in woodlands, but those conifer plantations can be impenetrable - but I'll take a hammock in case I get the chance to use it.

Let me know if you have any questions or ideas - and if you're new to this sort of thing, don't be afraid of asking, even if you think it's a stupid question!

Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Please pm me if you've already shown interest - whether you intend coming or not - that way I don't need to pm you all individually

New enquiries welcome........

Paul

I can't do the walk because of "old bikers knees"!
But if I'm free for an evening I can meet you somewhere along the route to bring in water etc. Hope it all goes well.

Thanks Ogri - nice of you to offer.

Not much of a problem getting water up there, though!

presumable you live in the area - if so would you consider pm' ing me your phone number?

You never know, we might get into difficulties and a firendly person nearby might be a godsend.

Might even be a change of a meet up at the end of the trip in Aber for a drink or something!

Hi - just came across the thread. Could be interested in joining you.
There's me and my boy, (tough 14 year old).
How many miles are you walking? I did the bit from Plynlimon to Machynleth about 4 years back.

Andrew

Thanks for your interest. Yes, you'd be welcome.

Not sure how many miles - I don't tend to count them. 30 miles at a guess. It's not intended to be strenuous - just fun! And there are escape routes if it proves too much for anybody.

Going from Machynlleth south to Nant y Moch, south to Ponterwyd - then following the west/north bank of the Rheidol towards Devils Bridge and over to Aberystwyth.

Starting from Machynlleth Railway station at around 1:30 pm on 23rh April, train back from Aberystwyth around 2pm on Monday 26th.

If you pm me your email addy then I can email you an intended routemap.

how many have we got going at the moment? its gonna be greaat to get out in the hills again.

Cheers Scott

Out of interest how did this trek go? I know the areas round Macc and Aber quite well from having Mountain Biked round the area.

And if this trek was to be re-tried I'd be more than interested in joining in. Just my cup of tea as it were.
