Hi Everyone!

As technology rushes forward our wilderness gear advances with it. Small and efficient LED lanterns offer an alternative to the traditional lantern. They are easy to carry in your pack and safe to use inside a tent.

I put the Orbit Lantern, by Black Diamond, through a six-month test.

Although I was pleased with its performance, there was a surprise at the end of the test period. I experienced a reliability problem.

I am interested to hear your comments if you already made the switch to an LED lantern.

Thanks for that illuminating treatise Woodsorrel. I have to say I've used two of these (lost one) and found them really useful. Especially if you are a swinger as they light up the inside of a tarp hanging from a ridgeline quite nicely. They are not to shabby in a tent too.

Hi Woodsorrel, thanks for thinking of us with the review, we much prefer that it's posted directly on Bushcraft UK rather than people be taken off site though, if you can keep this in mind I'd appreciate it, thanks.

Hi Tony,

I will make an effort to do this. What I should really do is post a separate review for the forum. I have been a bit lazy about this.

I saw what you did with that pun, Windy! :)

Did you have any reliability issues with your lanterns?

Hi Tony,

I will make an effort to do this. What I should really do is post a separate review for the forum. I have been a bit lazy about writing on the same subject twice.

Thanks for your understanding and if you can write separates ones that would be great as we might be able to use them in the reviews section as well

Thanks

Tad confused as you don't recommend buying one yet posted the review here. Or is that so we do indeed avoid purchasing a sub-standard product?

K

Ps: I'm actually in the market for a small and reliable tent lantern as my existing unit, of indeterminate parentage, failed with a similar problem. Namely the sprung negative (-) terminals became detached.

Klenchblaize, it is the latter. Not all reviews must be favorable. There is value in hearing about poor experiences with a product as well as the good.

I hope people can use the information from my experience to make an informed purchase. You can make a value judgment about whether my particular unit was an anomaly.

I exchanged the defective unit for the 2015 model. I will put it through the same tests and if it works reliably I will modify my review to recommend it.
