Hiya Guys
Mrs Forge is looking for a new tent and I thought I'd ask you lot.

Right then, for starters she wants it to use when visiting her mates, to do this she'll use public transport (with several changes) so it needs to be light and compact

Secondly, shes not hard-core so there needs to be enough space inside to stick a pack, sleep and get dressed (so no worm-tubes)

Due to the fact that some of the trips are going to be around now and into the start of the year it'll need to be fairly warm inside

Lastly price, we have a small tent that weights in at 6 1/2 lbs, she wants to save as much weight as possible, but we can't spend silly money for something thats only going to be used 4 or 5 times a year

So, to sum up
Less then 6 1/2 lbs
Compact when packed
Simple to pitch (by one person)
Inexpensive

Any ideas?

Thanks

That's a fairly tough spec you've put up there, but there is something that fits the bill IMO.

Have a look at this in Argos.

I have one (old model) and it's a great tent. It's frequently on offer, so look out for it when it's around the £30 mark. It was on offer a few weeks ago, so should be on offer again soon as it's the end of the season.

It's a lot of tent for the money and fairly well thought of by those who have one.

You didn't specify for how many persons, so I assume it's for her and her only. No tent is warm, to be warm the tent has to be heated.

Tarptent does several models which fit the bill, and are very light indeed.

Hilleberg akto is great, but expensive. MSR hubba is ok if you can stand some humidity. TNF tadpole is okay to. Hilleberg Unna is okay, but on the heavy side, terra nova has some models.

That's something to start with at least. Lifes to short for bad tents, buy a decent tent and she'll probably be willing to do more camping and outdoorsy stuff.

"Have a look at this in Argos."

I can definately recommend that tent too:)

I don't drive, so I use public transport or my push bike alot, and have spent ages (and a fair few quid:rolleyes: ) on trying to find a tent like your wife would like. This one is the best I've come across for price, lightness, compactness and decent comfortable size when being used. It can also be put up by one person very easily (though make sure the outer skin is tight as possible to stop possible sagging). I'm 5foot 4", and this tent holds me, and all my gear, very comfortably.

I'm normally put off buying one man tents (bad experience with one a while back, felt like I was living in a coffin :D ), but the Argos one is a good size inside. The only problem I have with it is the porch; it's very small. I solved this by buying a cheap Ripstop poncho for around a tenner (off army surplus or internet auctions etc) and setting it up like this:

http://www.backpacking.net/makegear.html

It's just handy if I want to dry socks/ boots etc, and weighs next to nothing to carry or wear.

Hope this helps, and you find what you're after:)

yeah ive got obe too - it as retail therapy when i was bored but i must admit i was very impressed with it. Have ended up using just the inner tent under my tarp for midge protection (and the wasps if i was gonna be totally honest) as i don't have a separate midge net - equally tho have used it in very heavy long lasting rain storms and I was completely dry and comfortable in it. There is a not a hell of a lot of room to manoeuvre in it but for the price i paid i cant complain - the only real downside is that its inner pitch first so no good putting it up if its already raining - i think i paid about £25 - £30 for mine and at that price they are a bargain.
