Back in September, in the French Alps, I spent about a week trying to catch crickets.
I could catch them by hand very easily, then cooked in a hot pot for 2 minutes.

But I could not catch any with a bottle trap. The area I used had thousands of crickets. I tried clear plastic 1.5 ltr bottles, white plastic milk bottles, dry sugar, sugared water, bottle standing up, laying down, in grass, bushes - I tried everything. NOWT.

Anyone else tried? Tips for next season?

I confess to being confused - most crickets eat vegetable matter, some eat other insects and (I believe) molluscs - so I don't know why sugar would work as bait :dunno:

Sugar works very well for cockroaches though :)

Insect flavour. Crunchy on the outside, fatty yukky soft on the inside.
Think insect intestines filled with poo, gonads and gods know what.....

I tried a couple of grilled locusts years ago.
I rather go militant Vegan.

Tried some in a packet from B&M a few months ago. Salt 'n' Vinegar flavoured (probably air fried?)

Not too bad, didn't taste much besides the salt. Slightly crunchy with lots of little bits to get stuck in your teeth...

Polymer of some amino sugar. Humans have no enzymes that can digest that. (2-amino D-glucose, maybe?)

Contents of Insecta? Take a close look at your windscreen after a 200 mile summer drive on a hot day.
Flavors? Lick said windscreen.
Here, I spray my radiator and grille with water to keep things juicy.
The yellow-jacket wasps will chew off all the fresh meat that they can.

Man, that turned me off eating those ant eggs I planned to introduce to son !
Most animal poo that enjoys bugs, type bats, show tiny bits of shiny remains of chitin. I can see that on the white roof of my car.
We have lots of bats here, the ones living in the mangroves around us practice precision bombing on my car roof.

Quite by accident, I found out that Canada's food processing regulations do set a limit
for the number of insect parts in various volumes of food cans. Same in the UK???

I've long since forgotten the details. But with a tube of Superglue, a screen and some tweezers,
you ought to be able to build a DIY cockroach from a case of babyfood jars.

For anyone unable to catch crickets for themselves and want to try them (or those who catch them in commercial quantities and are looking for an outlet! ;)), Sainsbury’s are now selling packs! :)

Can’t say I will be rushing to buy some but is it really any more yucky than eating shellfish, whitebait, Stilton etc and FWIW, in the US there are official guidelines on how much do your grub can be grubs! :)

In the US, I once bought a can of beondegi (번데기): silkworm pupae. It was marked on the can as being for animals, "not for human consumption", the FDA doesn't like you eating them. But in Korea, they are typical snack foods when having a skinful of soju or beer.

I clearly did not have enough of either soju or beer, because I couldn't eat more than two. Nasty. There are not many foods that I can't stand, but I think this must be one of them. Unless maybe I just got a dodgy can, or should have done something to them before eating them...

Like getting really, solidly drunk?

I did that ( when I was young and more stupid) in Mexico.
A bottle of Mescal, and finished the session by eating the worm.

I do not remember the taste, just remember the worm gave me a hell of a headache the next day.
