Not particularly bushcrafty this, but the hunt for moose is afoot here.

14 guys (elderly men, really) and two Norwegian Elkhounds hunting for 6 adult moose (plural form?) and 6 calves, over the next couple of weekends.

My part is sitting, mainly...ever vigilant :)
At present I'm on top of an elevated shooting platform (term?)

When the dogs are doing their thing, it is exciting to hear them bark...when it is silent it is also nice, in a way...but I prefer to hear the dogs.IMG_20180908_054807966_HDR.jpg

Hahahah...Freezer limit is well known :)

Tack, Alba...the meat is kind of good and the social aspects too, but those are not the main reason for me.

Antlers is quite useful (but it's a bit of a crap shoot - the marrow part dictates the usefulness)

Moose liver with fried onions...........
A kebab of kidney, meat, onion, peppers.........

Food for the gods!

Greger, an idea for you: save some hide, a square piece and dome strips.
Fantastic rawhide to use in knife making!

Flat rib - handle for an Ulu knife!

Man, you are sooooo lucky!

A spartan, but fun, dinner rounds out the day - grilled sausages. My attempts to imprint the Bratwurst greatness failed....the kids still prefer the Swedish Falukorv ("Sausage from Falun")

I have never used Moose skin, actually...hmm...that would be cool. Thanks, Janne.

The piece above the spine is thickest.
Femur bones are thick too, sometimes thicker than cow. Makes goid pieces for knife handles.

Falukorv is great food!

Do you make sausages from moose?

I have done a smoked moose sausage a few years back. Good stuff. Nowadays, I only make Prinskorv (hmm....my command of the anglo-saxon toubge fails me here...it's inch-long sausages, smoked and often seen on Swedish smorgasbord) for Christmas (with my mom).

I have Grandmother's recipe for wild rice stuffing to go into a roast moose heart. Don't mess that up, OK?
Our wild fires have burnt so much moose habitat in 2017 and already 2018 is worse.
Many First Nations are making a ban on any moose hunting at all. Will be hard on subsistence hunters
but they are the best stewards of the land.

I wish you every success, Greger. Any frosts yet? We have come close, maybe snow later this week.

Thanks, Robson Valley

When I go to the pre-hunt gathering it's about freezing....but come midday it was too hot for the dogs. In the afternoon my neighbour walked the dog in shorts and T-shirt.

Normally, Moose (and Reindeer) hearts go in the smoker.

Wouldn't want to be in the subsistence hunters shoes...sad to hear that.

Smoked moose heart? Never thought of that but I can do it. I can maybe get elk hearts this fall.
Shaved real thin, warmed up, rye bread with mustard and ale?
Sure hope you guys score, big time.

I know that weather = freeze and fry. You peel off clothes for half the day then it's so cold in the shade.
We have the same here now. Maybe 18C in the afternoon and 4C overnight.

Salmon fishing could be bad here too. If the Fraser River run (15,000,000+) sockeye hit warm water over 20C,
the "prespawn mortality" could be 10,000,000. It was 20.7C a couple of weeks ago but everywhere has cooled off
and the lower river is running 18C again. Probably helped by new snow melt around my place.

A prinskorv it is the opposite of what you might call Bologna, (Falukorv in Swedish or Norwegian)

One is tiny, one is large, but they both fill a hole ( in a hungry stomach)!

If you want and have the time, would you mind giving us the receipe for your home made Prinskorv?
Please?
