Is this just me.
I feel like I do more bushcraft at home than when I'm out. I always bring wood home to practice on in the garden or I put plastic down in the house but boy do I make a mess haha.
I tell the other half I'm learning what to do before I need to know. I dont like to be seen close to home with my axe, knife, all my kit. So unless I'm out the way or fishing I don't get to apply what I know.
Do you do this or just wait till your out.
I love tools, knives, bows, hunting, fishing makeing shelter and fire. Yet unless I'm with my kids I don't want people to see me, as I don't want them to feel awkward. If I'm teaching my 3 boys I'm good, but you can't learn yourself while looking after 3 little uns.
So do you wait u till you go out, or are you like me with Sox full of wood shavings.

I practice more of the craft side of things at home, woodwork, bowyery, fletching and leatherwork.
Most of this drives the missus nuts. Five minutes after hoovering I have walked in half my workshop floor all over the house. The rest such as fire-lighting, shelter knots and things just come as second nature after a few years and are more just part of a routine you do to keep you comfortable outdoors. This makes it easier to learn more about about flora/fauna or other outdoor interests, or just relax and enjoy.

I consider myself more of a "Homsteader" these days - I'm lucky to be able to use a huge amount of the skills in my daily life - we cook and heat with wood, grow food, forage, preserve, make wine and beer, trap, shoot etc.

In many ways it feels more "real" to me than holidays in the woods

" I'm learning what to do before I need to know." You've hit the nail on the head with that one statement............if you can accomplish that, in any way that you can, you'll avoid the vast majority of pitfalls and uncomfortable situations you're likely to encounter in the run of things; Doesn't much matter where you learn something, it's the fact that you have learned it that's relevant............atb mac

I like the sound of your daily routine. Who needs a holiday in the woods when your in it daily. It sounds like you are a woodsman.

I know what you mean.

I am lucky enough to be involved in a couple of ventures that enable me to practice whatever I want, but I still spend time in the garage making sawdust!

Home or woods - I am always doing something connected to my bushcraft.
At home I do a lot of sewing of kit and leatherwork or making knives, new techniques get practiced under the apple-trees in the garden, berries collected in the woods become jam, wine or jellies at home.
I seem to have integrated home and woods quite nicely :)

Its always good to do stuff at home and then test yourself in more difficult conditions, fire lighting can be very easy at home but in a wet, windy wood it can be very hard.

I often start a carving project in the woods and finish it off at home. Plus if we only practiced our hoby in the woods we would not do much and it would take longer to learn these skills. Keep it up and try not to worry what people think of you.

I had a couple of guys heckle me while foraging for mushrooms the other day in the local park. The dog took a disliking to them and started barking, they proceeded to run like girls and the dog chased them, guess he thought they were playing as it was his "play bark". I couldnt stop laughing, they're not so with a cocker spanial chasing them!

As a dog owner of any dogs, and finally a police dog handler, I do not think that you should be pleased that your sspaniel caused them to run off even if you knew it was in play, They possibly didn't. This is what gets responsible owners a bad name, and also the breed concerned. ha Ha, Get a Rottweiler next time.

Its fun - but not for everyone - I shovelled and spread two tonnes of compost today. It was lovely in the bright sun and now the frost can work on it over Winter - but hardly most peoples idea of a good time!
