Basha is the Army term for them,
hootchie is the Australian.

The tarp is the canvas/nylon/goretex sheet. The basha,hootchie is the improvised shelter made from the tarp. That's how I see it, other people may have different opinions. Some military terms may differ from civvy ones.
Tarp is short for tarpaulin

Not that I disagree with what your saying Gray, but why would you want a Gore-tex tarp?

I'd say bashes/hootchies fall into a separate category due to size....owt bigger than a basha is a tarp and I would say has to be a minimum of 3X2.8m to be called a tarp.
Bashes usually have press studs down the edges and 'tarps don't ;)

Courses are good, get to a few meets and ask questions as you are on here, you will pick up loads ogf info, none of use mind helping people out, anyway its all part of bushcraft... passing on the skills that we have learnt, inorder not to lose them again..

Join in and have fun.

In my book they are all the same, just differnt words for the same thing used by differnt people/countrys
