Hi folks,a wee update,i have again been in touch with Ian S and i can confirm that there will be Pole laithes, and he has managed to get the raw materials together for spoon carving, stool making,bowl/Kuksa carving. So a big thank you to him for this.

I know its still early days but i could do with an idea of numbers,so could you add your names to the list below,EVEN IF IT IS ONLY A PROVISIONAL "YES". Thanks

Cheers Stuart.

The list.

Hi Stuart.
If you are not averse to a raiding party from south of the border I'd love to come along.
If we would be allowed a fire I could do some breadmaking with foraged sourdough culture.
I will put in for the time off and see what happens.
Cheers , Simon

I'm provisionally up for this.

Looks a great venue. Community woodlands are a great thing - we need more of them.

Could offer some first aid/suturing, archery (but only if site suitable and manager consents) or amateur radio.

Hi folks

As Stuart says, we have been talking about what green woodworking activities we can run. Here is a possible set of ideas;

1) Sharpening, especially spoon knives (everyone's favourite!).

2) Spoon carving (We can take down a birch sapling for this - nice green wood).

3) We have a shavehorse, two drawknives, three pole lathes and two sets of pole lathe tools, so we can set up a couple of lathes and let people try them out?

4) We (will) have a workbench (once I've fitted legs to it!). We have some halved logs and Ash saplings which we can use for making stools, benches etc?

5) We have a bowlmate (bowl carving bench thingy - very effective it is) and I have a set of bowl carving tools, so we can maybe try bowl/kuksa making? Of all of the ideas listed, this will be the one which takes longest - maybe 3 or 4 hours each and really only one person at a time (constrained by tools more than anything else).

For 4) and 5), there will be an additional payment for materials etc. This will go straight to Wooplaw.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or would like further information.

Cheers

Hi everyone

In post 29 above, Doc posted

Could offer....archery (but only if site suitable and manager consents)

I offered to contact the manager to see if this would be a possibility, and unfortunately it isn't. I'd like to quote from my PM to Doc to explain this:

1) Wooplaw doesn't permit any rifles, air rifles or shotguns within the woods (Archery ain't firearms, but it is still a projectile).

2) Wooplaw is too easily accessed and too grown with trees to allow an adequate safety cordon to be set up (although we have the booking for the cabin, the woods as a whole will still be open to the public).

3) Wooplaw has a problem with vandalism/anti-social behaviour, so there would be a serious risk that idiots would see (responsible) archery and decide that they can have (irresponsible) archery.

I'd also like to quote part of Doc's reply to me:

That's fine, and I understand their reasoning. Please go ahead and post on the thread.

Archery safety depends on the topography - Loch Achray is good as it has a 20 foot high earth bank as a safe target area. Open accessible woodland is not ideal.

....I think their reasoning is fair enough.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news here, and I'd be happy to discuss this further, either on the thread or by PM if anyone would like to discuss this further.

We will however be able to have a good range of other activities, and I look forward to meeting you at Wooplaw.

Cheers

Many thanks to Ian for checking this out.

I think it will be a cracking meet even without archery.
