Wood ID please...

Hi,

At a mates drinking ales and throwing logs onto the woodburner and my mate asked me if I knew this wood as it's rock hard (splitting maul didn't make light work of it at all) and burns for ages. I don't know I said but I know a man (or woman) who will...

The bark...

The grain...

Any idea's?

I dont think it's oak just going off the bark. I also heard that oak whilst strong it relatively easy to split - this isn't.

Could be Hawthorn that is a very hard wood and burns really well it has a pinkish flame to it.

The flame is yellow/orange but has a hint of blue!? Like gas. The wood itself is very pale almost white.

I think it may be Elm, hard to split due to interlocking grain, light brown with reddish tinge to it.

Has your got some sort of brown flakes in it?

In that last photo, the wood definitely looks like some beech I had.

Beech for sure. The wrinkles around the branch union are a giveaway and the almost chequered pattern to the split face with a light colour.
