Spearguns/Spear poles and Spear fishing

I'm going away next month for a holiday and intend to try and get some spear fishing done of the coast, however I have no experience using spearguns/spear poles and am looking for advice from those who have used them. For the record I have snorkelling experience and the other associated gear.

Any advice appreciated from those who have tried or who practice it.
