Root walking stick???

was out on a bit of a bimble the other week and came across this

its quite thick, and have no idea what tree its from(i have difficulty id'ing a tree above the ground let alone under it!!!) but could i whittle it down to make a stick??? any suggestions for thinning it off?

A nice find. You could carve it with your knife or a spoke shave or just go at it with some sandpaper. Either way it should make a very nice walking stick. Rub it with several coats of boiled linseed oil when you get it smooth.
