pardon my venting...idiots suck (DD)

have you ever encountered a person who, despite all of your efforts to be cordial, positive, forgiving, and understanding, just continues to be a World-Class Idiot? i rarely let off steam, but boy...

let me tell you. i work very, very hard and put in an ENORMOUS amount of time into generating quality work in this field. nicely formatted, accurate, error-checked (best i can), original stuff. my work and my website speak for themselves and me. but occasionally a moron comes along (in this case, over at a survival forum) and tries to ruin it. i might feel bad if that person really had experience and wisdom in this field, but he doesn't show any of that in his posts.

i really, really like engaging in forums, of which this one is one of the best--because of you folks who contribute. and Leon et al. sets a good tone over here. unfortunately, it sometimes seems as though one festering boil can erupt all over, spoiling everything.

what does one do in cases like this? ignore him? doesn't seem like there's any closure there. thank's for listening to my carrying on...

I agree with the General on this. Give them a warning and make it public so everyone knows what is goign on and if they persist, ban them. Just remember to make a note of thier IP address in case they come back with another user name.

You always will get one rotten egg on forums and you cannot convey emotions well in the electronic world, so one persons view may come acrosss being offensive when it is not the intention in the first place, hence why we use smilies (emoticons), but dont let them get to you, its simply not worth it and if it gets personal, report them to the net police.

Hi, I agree 100%

One of my other passions is Movies and I contribute to ymdb.com (your movies data base) it has been a wonderful site in the past, with much the same feel as this site. But one user has almost destroyed it. He caused the site to be abandoned by the owners and now its sale. It is starting to be reborn, but has lost most of the users that made it what it was. It used to get hundreds on-line. Now you’re lucky to see 5.

We should take care of this site my controlling its use by those childish, selfish @#* amongst us.

A friendly warning pointing out the upset his tone is causing.

If that fails,a total ban is in order as he is obviously a trouble making b$stard who enjoys upsetting people.

Without knowing the facts there isn't a proper answer. But in general things should escalate from (a) ingore to (b) polite request to (c) ban. If you're not a moderator, then probably a polite e-mail to the site admin informing them of what's happening is a good move.

Unfortunately, common sense actions are the exception rather than the rule, as forums have a habit of erupting into huge flame wars, with grown men and women acting like school children. It's sad, really, but it's the problem of the medium, as you're missing so much of the message compared with face-to-face conversation.

Also Storm hasn't said but I kind of get the impression that he isn't a moderator of the forum in question, but a contributor who is being pestered.

I just had a quick look at your site Storm, and I must say it really is excellent! I'm sure your knowledge and hard work will preserve over some idiots trolling!

thanks folks...a good night's sleep takes care of a lot... :)

no--it's certainly not this forum. BushcraftUK is the most cordial one out here in cyberspace. i don't want to drag this out, but the offender is a moderator of another forum, and has deleted my responses. oh well...no use worrying about things i can't control. cheers!

Here are some other splendid sayings by Mr Ward that make me smile:

"Three keys to more abundant living: caring about others, daring for others, sharing with others."

"Learn and grow all you can; serve and befriend all you can; enrich and inspire all you can."

"A true friend knows your weaknesses but shows you your strengths; feels your fears but fortifies your faith; sees your anxieties but frees your spirit; recognizes your disabilities but emphasizes your possibilities."

"Nothing limits achievement like small thinking; nothing expands possibilities like unleashed imagination."

"Before you speak, listen.
Before you write, think.
Before you spend, earn.
Before you invest, investigate.
Before you criticize, wait.
Before you pray, forgive.
Before you quit, try.
Before you retire, save.
Before you die, give."

"God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say "thank you?""

Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you. Love me and I may be forced to love you.

If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.

Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.

To make mistakes is human; to stumble is commonplace; to be able to laugh at yourself is maturity.

It is wise to direct your anger towards problems -- not people; to focus your energies on answers -- not excuses.

Need to contact Admin...
Moderating ETS, I've learned to "type twice and hit enter once." This isn't the best medium for clear communication and sometimes you have to figure out people. We had one member who was a little rough around the edges, wanted to post about firearms and had strong opinions. The site owner PMed me to watch him and several times my finger hovered over the ban button. Eventually he calmed down only to go offline due to extreme financial and personal burdens. Now I miss the guy! People have some very strange motivations online. The immunity of anonymity can be very destructive. A recent T.V. programme managed to trace the owner and agent who emailed pornography that was read by a lady's children. It wasn't easy, but eventually they sat down with the guy in Toronto and extracted an apology over the phone to the woman. This is one reason I sign my name to posts. It's called responsibility and I've gained some offline friends this way. Once I was defending my friend Julia Butterfly, who I assisted during her treesit online. My only ally oddly enough was a Buchannan supporter  We both evacuated the site after exchanging contact information. Now we get in trouble at gunshows together wearing NADER and BUCHANNAN buttons  You will eventually see the same names at similar websites. It's fun, you have to be carefull not to tell the same lies or step on toes " well at ETS we shave fuzz sticks THIS WAY." In the end you may just have to BANN the idjit and deal with his slings and arrows on other sites with a good wicker shield.

Storm,

I would have thought the answer was obvious, don't post there anymore! This guy sounds like a muppet so let him be one and spend more of your time posting your tutorials in places where they will be very much appriciated....like here! lol :)

Seriously, it's their lose if you stop posting not yours, you obviously know your stuff and are passionate about your skills and it's great that you share your findings so freely but if it's not appriciated then bring them to where they are :)

If you're worried about letting other forum members down (and I suspect from your nature that you would be) then publicly tell everyone that you are leaving that forum for "personal" reasons but that you can be found here at bcuk. Then those that enjoy your work can come here to see it and if "muppet boy" follows and carries on as you have discribed; our own team of Mods will soon sort him out for ya :D

Keep the tutorials coming here though whatever....I wouldn't call myself a begginer in the world of bushcraft or the outdoors by any stretch but I always seem to find something new or useful in all your posts :)

Hope that helps and chin up buddy....

Bam. :D
