I don't live there but I was on Orkney earlier in June - the sun doesn't set, it's fantastic -
and had a great time. I was there for work so was there for less than 24 hours but I
managed to see a lot of the mainland in the afternoon.
Although I didn't get a chance to check it out myself, I did pick up a leaflet in my hotel
(honestly is there anything more 'armchair' than that
) for a bushcraft school based in

I'd also recommend just wandering around to see all the standing stones and Skara
Brae and have a look at the agricultural college's efforts to get a historic barley back
on the menu in the niche products market:

Other than that I can only recommend searching Orkney or Shetland to see what else
has come up.
I'm sure Wayland can make some suggestions - the islands are very keen on their
Viking heritage (possibly that bere barley arrived in Orkney with the Vikings...).
