Mystery canteen

Picked up this canteen & cup from a box of assorted militaria bits at the local antiques centre and having trouble identifying it. Any ideas?

One litre capacity, Aluminium, wide-mouth opening (40mm), rounded bottom and wobbles like a weeble. No makers/issue markings. There's no trace of a chain attachment point on the canteen so the string is either a very old DIY repair or an original feature. There was a pouch for it but they sold it separately last week...

It is a 44 pattern water bottle, I have a couple of them, one with the plastic screw cap and one with the metal screw cap, the cord is correct, it was usually a piece of paracord some did have a brass chain similar to toilet flush chain. The pouches sell for a small fortune if they are original.
