When collecting Mullein (verbascum thapsus) for your hand drill, don't throw the rest of the plant away as it is a useful plant. It was once called Candlewick because the plants thick down was rubbed off to make wicks in candles and lamps. The dried down makes a superb tinder. The dried leaves can be used in herbal tobacco. The leaves can be put in shoes where the soles have worn out (useful advise if you walk long distances or if you are a tramp). The stem can also be dipped in tallow and used as a torch. Medically the plant has uses for coughs, bronchitis, croup, ear ache, sore throat, laryngitis, pharyngitis, tired and strained eyes, diverticulosis, migraine and neuralgia to name some. The plant was also given to Ulysses to protect him from the sorcery of Circe, who had changed his crew into pigs. There must be a moral to that story ???
So there you go a bit about Mullein that maybe you didn't know.............Jon
