Might not be ancient enough for many of you but hopefully will still be of interest.
It takes place in June, next year. There are other courses on the web page given
below.

Medicinal Plants Study Week
An exploration of written and illustrated material on medicinal plants from the first century
AD to the present day in libraries and archives in London. It is hoped to include visits to
the herbaria/libraries at Kew and the Natural History Museum, the Wellcome Institute, the
Linnean Society and the Society of Apothecaries. There will also be visits to herb
gardens, with practical plant identification sessions and talks on the history of plant
names and illustration. This will be of special interest to practitioners using plants, as well
as those keen to appreciate more about the history of botany and medicine.

Sounds absolutely excellent Jodie, I do wish it weren't at the other end of the country for me and right in the middle of my busy season. :(

I really hope it's full of information and lots of interesting detail. :)

Oooooh, I would so love to do the course but it clashes with something else I have already arranged to do.

Let us know how the course goes and I may look into doing it in 2009.

Given that only two have signed up for it I'm a bit worried it might be cancelled...

But thanks for the cheerful wishes anyway, fingers crossed they get a bit of a rush on,
but it's not that well advertised and I don't think people would really go looking for plant
courses at Birkbeck, more likely at Kew! (But they don't do much in the way of short
courses at the moment).

Fingers crossed the system lets me stay logged in for long enough to write a post!

This course is superb - I'm really enjoying it and it's very well organised. We've had
a really excellent talk from Sue Minter on the issues of herbalists contributing to
conservation (she's from the Eden Project) and we've pootled around the several
herb gardens of London (Royal College of Physicians, Kew, Geffrye Museum, Barber
surgeons (by London museum), today we're going to Chelsea Physic Garden). The
people are nice on the course too :)

Last weekend I was at the Cheltenham Science Festival and there was a stall for
the Medicine Chest (http://www.medicinechest.info/) which is a joint venture between
Channel 4 (Medicine Men programme) and Kew's Ethnomedica project. I'm going
to suggest to the festival organisers that they should have a bit more ethno-planty
stuff next year as I think the topic chimes well with the ideas the festival is already
promoting - conservation of natural resources, engaging the public with science and
that sort of thing :)

 Sounds so good, and I am so envious  However, redcoats and highlanders are us at the moment  and Iron age this weekend.
I wish we could get courses like this a bit further north too.

Looking forward to hearing more about the things you've seen, heard and done, Jodie.

Mary
