Tick and mosquito repellants in 2024

Certainly any kind of perfume has been shown to attact, including all these "smells like a summers day" laundry detergents conditioners and scent boosters. Definitely worth avoiding all that stuff. To me the best "Summers day" smells are mud and campfires anyway :D

Tick and mosquito repellants in 2024

I get bitten by pretty much everything and react with great inflamed lumps at the bite site. Have found DEET to be utterly useless against Scottish Midgies. This is my weapon of choice... Sorry for advertising Boots. https://www.boots.com/boots-repel-holiday-home-pump-spray-100ml-10308440

You are going on a 3 day trip and have to stay UK legal so what do you carry?

As you don't say where you are going and what you will be doing, it is difficult to give an answer. A long weekend at a rave would get you a completely different answer to 3 days wild camping and hiking across Rannoch moor for example.

Bizarre question - is a sub-3" locking or fixed blade legal?

3 inches only ever applies to NON locking knives. Locking knives and fixed blades are treated the same by the law. A NON locking knife OVER 3 inches is also treated the same as a fixed blade or locking knife. Hope that helps clear up any confusion.

    Legality and Perception of EDC's

Never, and I expect not many of us are prone to being "off our trolleys" in public places or hanging around with gangs of teenagers trying to buy drink at the off license or otherwise generally being a nuisance. Although I was once searched by a particularly suspicious border guard while...

    Some cool lighters

Love them, even though I quit smoking years ago there is something immensly satisfying in all these kinds of gadgets to make fire. I still carry a zippo in my pocket every day. You could spend a fortune collecting all the variations, and don't even start me on collecting Zippos... Nowadays...

    Legality and Perception of EDC's

Oh the police CAN ask you why you have a sub 3 inch non locking folder, but you don't really need to give them any answer other than "it is less than 3 inches and readily foldable at all times officer". Answering such a question with anything else gives them the opportunity to say "well you are...

Need to be taught better- woodland vandalism

Wasn't blaming the schools, if you reread my post.

    Placing a Static

Agree that the council / local councillor is the best place to start. It can be a minefield considering you may have to apply for a "change of use" permission depending on the site. It is always best to get off on the right foot with the council from the outset otherwise they can make the task...

Ah to heck with it, just put the bull in the woods for a week or 2 then

Need to be taught better- woodland vandalism

The education system has a lot to answer for, I for one would be happier if more time was spent educating kids how to behave responsibly outdoors and less forcing kids to pass exams. In Germany the hunters would put up signs warning of Rabies to deter casual visitors where much of the woodland...

    Ramson Soy

Embarassed to admit I read this as Damson Soy and came here wondering "Why would anyone ever want to do that?". Wild garlic on the other hand, heck yes, go for it.

water proof jacket and trouser. what to get

Gortex vs Waxed , they both offer different things. Goretex tends to be noisier when moving around but probably more waterproof, brambles hawthorn and sitka all just bounce off a barbour but a waxed jacket can be cold when things are damp they start off well in the rain but after a few hours...

Fiskars tools - are they plastic tat?

Have a few fiskars tools and agree with a lot of what you say. A fair bit of thought seems to go into making them but like your gardening trowel all that thinking may not be the best fit for all users. Hollow handles save a lot of weight on axes etc but accidentally run one over with the...

    Whetstones

Generally, you get what you pay for. Of course it depends on what you want, if you are OK with a rough and ready toothy edge for your slicing then a cheap stone will do it for you in a jiffy. If you are aiming for hair shaving sharp or reshaping profiles on seriously hard modern steel then...

What tinder to wrap around a ferro rod?

I see Amazon US is selling waxed hemp cord as an easy to light waterproof tinder. Probably never met good Scottish downpours but I guess stored in a ziplock bag it would take up minimal space. Not too sure the "bellows" is up to much either, worth getting a little hemp cord and some wax and...

    New Zippo Insert

Definitely, the petrol ones dry out and need refilled with petrol at least once a week. The butane ones will stay unused and on stand by for years. As a smoker there was so much ritual restocking cigs or papers or baccy, emptying ashtrays etc that topping off the zippo was just part of the...

    Handkerchiefs

Definitely hankies here. Constant allergies and getting to the age where wind in my eyes makes them weep too. If I had used tissues all these years I dread to think how much paper I would have cost the planet.
