Nice to see it in action, this was my first stove bought when I was a kid on a Lake District holiday in the early 80's. Also got a small mess set for sum total of a fiver and still have them both today as part of the 'collection'.
Thanks guys. Next question, canvas or cordura? Like old canvas packs personally but which ones are in the best nick in your experience as the MM photos only show the modern one.
Ta!
Hi there,
Been looking at these packs and just wondered if anyone had one and could provide some feedback. Also what kind of condition they arrived in, esp the canvas one. They look pretty robust and not too uncomfortable.
cheers

Well done from me as well! I managed to get my first fire lit with a firepiston at the weekend and the joy was tremendous! Nothing wrong with a flint and steel, it works great when everything is generally soaking up here in Scotland. Apologies to those experiencing the water shortage in the...
Thanks for the feedback Roy. I'm still a bit undecided as I've been pointed in the direction of the Old Town Saranac. Currently looking to see where I can get the best deal overall as the major downside is the delivery cost. Having said that, the Saranac is about the same weight and has...
Hi guys,
Thanks for all the great feedback, much appreciated!! I've tried out your tips and I'm glad to report a much improved success rate.
Have a great weekend and I hope I can repay the favour sometime.
Cheers,
Craig
Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your feedback, much appreciated. I've had a tinker with the piston tonight, trying out some of your advice and am having a bit more success. As always, one answer leads to another question.........
1) When seating the piston how far in should you place it?
2) re. the...
Evening guys,
Wondered if you could help - I got a firepiston from Bushcrafttools.com and having mixed success with getting it to work. Does anyone have any tips/hints?
I've tried greasing the o-ring and also adjusting the 'spread' of the washer to vary the tightness of the seal as well as...
Afternoon chaps,
Thinking of getting a canadian style canoe and have seen ones advertised on the internet - "Water Quest Scout 14"-does anyone have any experience of these and are they any good?
I'm not a paddler but have always fancied a canoe for family trips out but these seem to be a...
Just tried my whisperlite which has a better wick and it went ok so the wick does seem to be key. Agree re. priming lamps in cold weather, i also have a svea 123 and hunter 8r which take a bit of priming in winter.
Hi guys,
Trying to prime an msr xgk with parraffin same as i do in summer - the fuel itself won't actually light but vaporises ok after priming with meths. I've also got a paraffin wick lamp which has been outside for last fortnight and lights okay. Temp here has been around freezing but not...
Hi Mark,
I've had a bit of a tinker with home made meths stoves as well and i do think that they need a good bit of preheating to fire properly. I've also used loft insulation as a filler inside them to try and 'contain' some of the fuel as well as provide a bit of internal insulation. Seems...
Hi Guys,
Just reading the thread re. Bear Grylls. I'm also a scout leader and our section has a strong bias towards bushcraft and camping and as far as the kids go they all think that Bear is a great role model for Chief Scout. Whether or not you agree with him being an 'entertainer' or...
